It's because statistically there's a strong correlation between being responsible with money and being responsible with driving. It's a similar principal as factoring in school grades for teens.

but why not driving normaly (60km/h) and swerving to avoid a dog, or a pedestrian that shouldnt have been there?
all im saying is take it just a little bit easy untill we know what happend exactly..
if the driver was street racing, then flame on!

I don't like that roof dent, racing or not that roof corner is where your face goes and that should have been the last part of the roof to collapse.

alright fair 'nuff, but assuming stock tires, the Michelin Primacys on the BRZ/FR-S are low-rolling resistance tires and rather un-grippy as sports car tires go

agreed but i dont want to go off topic here
other things such as pot holes rocks uneven ground etc can also cause this sort of stuff to happen at low speed where as at high speed you would either just fly over it or rip the wheel off..
all i meant, honestly, is that we should stop assuming the worst about the driver.
im not religious, so i am not going to pray for anyone, but i really hope that the driver is ok

Based on the two separate witness accounts by members here, I'll assume they were involved in some sort of racing.

My thoughts exactly.

Due to take delivery of a Premium MT in three weeks, but am somewhat worried by these crash pics. On the minus side, driver-side pillar really got a bad hit; on the plus side, the passengers did OK (am amazed that the rear passenger did not get hurt more) and the IIHS bestowed a "Good" rating on the twins in its roof strength test:

http://www.iihs.org/ratings/roof/detailsbyclass.aspx?40

The IIHS procedure is described here: http://www.iihs.org/ratings/roof/information.html

Thoughts?

In related matters, I noticed a sharp improvement in roof strength for the Honda CR-Z, from 2011 to 2012. The explanation is here:

The FR-S is certainly far safer than the old RWD cars when traction control is on... so what do you think are the odds this kid had traction control on?
I don't agree with your premise. FWD was not really common in the US in any significant numbers until the mid/late 70's. By then the safety equipment introduced (seat belts, significant bumper improvements, head rests, crumple zones, the Interstate HWY system, etc, etc) and that is where the real gains were.

I've driven RWD most of my life, and have actually only had one car as my primary vehicle (a '77 Honda Civic CVCC wagon) that wasn't RWD, so perhaps I've been "trained" to drive it but I think the difference between FWD and RWD in terms of driving experience is being exaggerated.

The real problem is the 86 is a sports car, drivers see it as a sports car, and (in general) it is driven more aggressively like a sports car. You expect it can handle more so you drive it that way and when things go bad, you are more committed to your mistake, and pay the price (nannies on or off).

So, I have to wonder, for those of us that grew up with RWD, should we have the "problem" in reverse? I mean, if I get in a FWD car, will I no longer be able to make the car go around a corner because the understeer is working against me? Just saying....

I know that I'm statistically probably an outlier, but my MR2 has no LSD, no electronic gizmos to keep the car stable, and I've driven it that way for years through rain and even snow a few times. People can blame the drive train and gizmos all they want. I drive my FR-S pretty much 99% of the time with the TCS/VSC completely disabled, and I never turn that useless crap on when I'm on the track. It's just there to increase the error margin and keep inexperienced drivers out of situations they don't know how to handle.

The right amount of momentum, coupled with the wrong input from the driver, and a dash of circumstance can lead to an accident in ANY car with ANY drive train configuration.

I just really hope that driver is ok ... terrible accident.

I'm shocked, and I hope the driver is okay, but if this accident was because of racing, I do not feel sorry that the driver's car is smashed. He had better learnt his lesson well. There is NO EXCUSE for street racing, my friends, especially when there's a track in every town. Heck, there's an 1/8 and a 1/4 track in Montgomery itself. Up in Birmingham there's a really nice road course. Maybe I'm a bit spoilt because I live down South, but I know that we aren't the only ones with racetracks.

Whether the driver was doing something horrible or not, I hope they are ok. There are many scenarios that could end up in this same situation, and it's best not to make assumptions. Yes, *if* this was a result of racing on public roads, then I would be very angry and upset, but I wish no harm upon them or their car. Lessons can be learned a variety of ways.

WRT the FWD/RWD increasing chances of an accident, the reality is if you put the same driver in another car and he makes the same poor decisions, he will wreck either way. It's much more about being responsible than how your car is configured.

If you go beyond the limits of your car or your ability, you'll wreck whatever you're in.

While I agree wholeheartedly with this statement, I would like to take your position a step further...
