Made it half way through this thread and have the uncontrollable urge to slap every single person that has been going on and on about "street racers are dumb". I used to race when I was younger yes it was dangerous, yes it was illegal but you people are acting like you're saints Jesus Christ get off your high horse already. Street racing is only dangerous if you're not smart about it. I raced every weekend for three years and only witnessed two accidents. One was a guy in an rx8 lost control when he hit sand going around a corner( he was later found to he high on shrooms). The other was two idiots in cavaliers that weren't actually associated with the scene but happened to be weaving in and out of each other try to show off to us and one cliped the other and sent him into a poll. Yes you always hear about how street racing kills and we have to end it. Tell ya what maybe if people had legal places to go and race we wouldn't do it on the road. I really hate to bang on about this but crap like this really pushes my buttons. If you don't want to be associated with people who race go buy a Prius or a mini van.

Don't get me wrong, I did a lot of stupid things behind the wheel when I was younger...things that I wouldn't do now out of consideration for the other people on the road and my own family. As you grow older, you start to see the bigger picture... |

The group of people I raced with used deserted roads in the industrial area of my city, we did not do highway pulls and in the rare case of any traffic we got out of the way. What I did was organized street racing not just a bunch of yahoos screaming down crowded streets. Judge all you want I don't care.

sad to say, I have seen a scene EXACTLY like this when I used to hang out with my car buddies in the 818 cali...
We were JUST leaving Denny's around 2-3 am on a friday night I believe. Almost nine years ago (damn I'm getting old). We were in my friend's custom painted 3000GT VR4 Twin Turbo. Nothing crazy, just painted but still... car LOOKS like a rice rocket. Saw a black integra speeding away from a lonely intersection... and a prelude and truck smashed in the middle of the street. We put two and two together and figured the 'lude t-boned the truck. The drivers were bleeding, but conscious. We called 9-1-1, and all that. OF COURSE, the cops questioned us as if we were some how involved, but luckily... I pulled out our receipt from Denny's showing that we were just eating. He let us go and the two drivers were taken to the hospital. It's so sketchy how someone could just bone out like that, but he did... And yes, I've raced on the street before. Then, I had guns pulled on my by the cops. I did it one time... I got caught... I got warned... I stopped. I was lucky. People make mistakes and I don't think it's right to wish harm or death on anyone without having the facts at least. I hope everyone is okay... including those bitching about their insurance rates... |

Why are we assuming the electronic aids were on? The car's electronics can only save you so much...I'm willing to bet that IF the driver was racing, the electronics were turned off. I know when I go (safely) have fun with the RWD, I turn the electronics off. I also went to an empty parking lot in the rain to see how the car handles without the aids; it's a totally different car. I fully plan to go back in the snow and at least a few more times in the rain to understand the dynamics. I suggest you all do too.
For reference, I managed to do several thousand dollars of damage to my WRX in the wet. It was cold, it had rained earlier (but not at the time of the fuck up), driving a stretch of road I drove daily for years, and I was on all-season tires. AWD is defeatable, electronic aids are defeatable; life will put you in a situation where nothing can help you. Learn from those mistakes, try not to make them again. Learn from this guys mistake, preferably. Save yourself the money, headaches, and guilty conscience. Requisite comment about insurance because I'm young and it's expensive, but at least this wasn't a BRZ... |

On a more positive note, I'm surprised how well the FR-S can help you avoid accidents. I was going about 50 mph down a dark road this morning when my headlights illuminated what looked like a deer carcass laying in the middle of the road and coming up fast. With just a 1/4 turn of the steering wheel (and seemingly before I could think), I was able to swing the FR-S into the next lane over.
No drama, barely any body roll. The front end bit hard on turn-in and the rest of the car just tucked neatly into place. I was mindful about the rear end coming around because this was almost a scandinavian flick, but the rear stayed in place with the VSC in sport mode (I did not lift off the throttle). With all the feedback from the car, you can really tell what each end is doing and how much traction is available. Love this car! |

Of course you realize that there were an awful lot of safety features introduced in cars over the years covered by the graph. I seriously doubt that front wheel drive had as much influence on reducing traffic fatalities as seat belts, airbags, engineered crush zones, not to mention increased enforcement of seat belt laws, etc..

Mid America is one of the nicest race tracks in the country and not far from you. I'm guessing you can't find it, can't afford the entry fee or are too young to be allowed to race there. |
