A little different that the real vs fake wheels. They are not trying to copy someone else design.

I have a PNP HID kit and it looks just fine to me. Cutoff is clean and there is no horrible glare like some say you will get.

Wow, that looks great. Much better than my GTO with HIDs in the stock projectors. Those projectors sucked out loud, but once I adjusted them they really didn't glare any more than the OE HID projectors I had in my IS250. I actually sat in my friends' cars to make sure that the light wasn't blinding either oncoming cars or cars ahead of me in traffic.

Aiming your damned headlights is key. Don't just level them. Level them on a car from 50 feet so that the cutoff is below the door mirrors. That is the BEST way to ensure you're not dangerously blinding someone.

so i just got mine today and i think im missing a part or im reading the directions wrong. The first img is everything i got and connected so far. Though the instructions says to connect the plug coming from the bulb to the ballast? Then connect the red/black wires coming from the bulb to the org socket? How do go connecting the red/black wires to thw org socket if i dont have a plug? Am i missing it or do i need to do something else?

*EDIT* I got it working, just needed to watch a part of a video to understand what to do.

Exclamation WARNING

HID bulbs, especially grey market, have different heat distribution pattern from halogens. While dissipating a lower amount of overall heat, they can cause hot spots. Usage of said bulbs in factory halogen housing will void warranty. Should you choose to go this route remember to monitor the output and housing for signs of excessive heat as well as yellowing of the beam. Both indicate a progressive wear leading to the breakdown of the plastics. In certain circumstances the bulb will cause the housing to start on fire.

PROGRESSIVE WEAR means that a good light today might become a fire a year from now.

How hard is it to retrofit the good HID projectors into the FR-S?

BRZ should be trivial, provided the price is not too high... you can even argue that they are road legal.

Cut job will largely depend on how close the replacement is to the current, I would look into GT86 parts bin to see which parts are swapped on the assembly line, could be a common Toyota/Subaru reflector used in the HID units and those would be available from ebay salvage.

If someone could take a picture with stock headlight with HID bulbs from inside the car on a dark road, that would be great!

Time to splice a multimeter into the connector (the 12V one) might be a bad light relay, capacitor discharge or there could be a bonus light burnout check that Toyota did not disclose. Try to get the pattern down (time interval, bump in the road, 5 min after turning lights off or car on etc.)

Is this wired inline or is there another relay like on the box lid?

here are some pics, as dark of a road as you can get, one was taken on a little hill facing down and another was on a flat road. Also my phone dosent take the best night pics so the lights are brighter in person. Also I took two shots of where I put my ballast incase anyone dident have a good place to put them.

(photobucket is being derpy and not resizing them so i will have to add links)
