In those situations, if you need to shift using paddle, with a wheel-mounted paddle it is difficult to do so, especially if you shuffle your hand for turning. On the other hand, having a column-mounted paddle you will have no problem.

E.g. in a community starting from dead stop to make a right turn, you will need to turn the wheel 1/2 to 1 full circle and you do need to shift from 1st to 2nd gear.

However, in a track or winding roads where you only need to turn < 1/2 circle in either direction, having a wheel mounted paddle will help you since you can always keep your hands at 3-9 o'clock location. And I think this is where Tsuchiya san's comment came to effect. And this is proven by the way F1 cars are using the wheel mounted paddles.

IMHO, for street car, column mounted paddles seem to have less problems compared with wheel mounted paddles, but for race-oriented cars wheel mounted paddles seems to be better suited.
F1 is so different it should not even be mentioned. firstly, they have something like 0.8 turns lock-to-lock. secondly, the steering wheels are detachable. lastly, the clutch paddles are also on the steering wheel, so should we copy that as well?

i dunno anything about that tsuchiya quote. it may just be personal preference for all i know. he probably doesnt want to shuffle or let go of the wheel when going triple digit speeds. and that is totally understandable... when he drifts, he shuffles his hands though so... i dunno... oh and dont get me wrong, if you're talking about a strict road racing car, wheel mounted is better.

with column mounted paddles, you can make them larger and if you are have the wheel turned, you can either shuffle your hands to go closer to the 9 and 3 o'clock position to use the paddles. or you can simply let go of the wheel for a fraction of a second and shift like a manual. this is a road car with power steering. its perfectly ok to let go of the wheel for a fraction of a second. heck even F1 drivers have to let go of the wheel to change settings, etc. albeit mainly on the straights... obviously you wouldnt have to do this with wheel mounted paddles, but shuffling your hands isnt such a big deal and in fact a lot of instructors teach shuffle steering as the preferred method of steering so... ymmv...

We'll include an on-off switch. Or simply let idiots destroy their transmissions put a warning label and we're covered. "caution, do not headbang when manual mode is engaged"

as a side note, F1 steering wheels have 2 clutch paddles because at full lock, arms crossed, the hand on the bottom will not be able to touch the paddles (unless you're freakishly flexible)...

Bla give me the manual and I'll save the difference in money for something else. A slightly faster 0-60 time or a quicker shift doesn't mean anything to me unless I have three foot pedals and my left foot gets to play too.

No,
manual transmission > automated manual (DSG/DCT) > automatic with a torque converter. Most DSG and DCT are just automated manual transmission with less control, a little more weight, and $$$$. The few good ones you pay through the nose for them.

I'm just teasing Zaku anyway.

I'm spoiled with almost a decade of Honda transmissions. Although my current Mustang is punishing me. So I feel it will be an upgrade in between.
