If your concerned about them not changing the filter, put a mark on it. I use a white shoe polish we use for applying numbers to car windows, just put a big fat dot on there. When they change it, that dot will be gone.

Keeping all service records from the dealer increases resale value, if you do the changes yourself, please keep track of mileage when changed and the recipts of the oil/filter used. This way, you are covered if there is engine failure in case there is a warranty dispute falling on "improper oil"

I guarantee you that I am much more thorough with my work. I've had 2 issues with previous dealers, and finally stopped giving them my work (WAY overtightened oil drain bolt...other time didn't tighten the oil filter enough, which caused oil to majorly leak).

I trust myself, far more than the dealer. I'd be willing to bet, most are more cautious with their own vehicle over the dealer's work.
It's good to work on your car I'm just saying in most cases people don't complete their oil change correct. It's not they don't know how its that the don't tighten the drain bolt all the way or they over/under fill it. In my 11 years experience I have never see any technician keep the drain bolt loose and have shipped it to the customer but that's only my experience and I'm not saying it didn't happen to you because people make errors from time to time. As far as stripping your oil pan from over tightening it. Thats hard to discuss because every time you remove and reinstall the drain plug it wears out the bolt threads and I don't know the mileage you had on your car. It's just funny how people think a drain bolt will last for ever. I replace them all the time and if a customer gets pist for having to pay an extra $10 ish bucks then too bad because I'm not taking the blame for an oil pan.

That's what Fumoto drain valves are for. Quick, efficient, never have to replace the bolt.

you get one free oil change every 7.5k from Scion. especially this early in an engines life it's a bad idea to wait that long (which is what I believed you were inferring)

@Art_Mighty was just pointing out the shavings found during an oil change. If we take your advice and have the dealer do the oil change, you'd have to wait until 7500 miles. All those metal shavings are circulating around for 7500miles.

I believe he's saying this is a good reason to change your own oil, rather than have the dealer do it.

Edit: Oops...I just realized Art_Mighty replied as well

Doing the oil change early is fine but of you do it too early their will still be more shavings. But that's is not what I really care about, wix filters are garbage and I would never use one on my car.

Everyone thinks that all the shavings will be out within 1000 and that's wrong. It's going to take more then 1000 miles to have the engine completely broken in. Me personally I'm doing mine every 5000 but that's me.

This filter has metal cartridge end caps, but has a separate bypass valve assembly that rests against the front end cap. I refer to this as a two-piece filter cartridge. The separate valve takes some of the internal filter space from the filter cartridge itself, which is something to consider for shorter filters (see the Car Quest and NAPA Toyota filters for an example). It uses an anti-drainback valve that doubles as the bypass valve-to-backplate seal. Instead of the leaf spring spacer that most filters use, these use a stiff coil spring at the top of the cartridge. The only drawback to this design is that the bypass valve seats metal-to-metal against the bottom cartridge end plate. This could allow dirty oil to seep from the dirty side to the clean side of the filter, bypassing the element. The design will not allow oil to seep back into the pan, though and the amount of oil that can get past is probably negligible.

If you're going to copy and paste that much text from another website, at least give the source some credit. Or were you trying to sneak one by everyone?

Nah its called lazy and didn't want to give a site with that much reading it was quick and easy. Anyone that knows how to Google information can find it like yourself.
