Status: Connected
Darun (Listening)
Darun: Hi, my name is Darun. How may I help you?
Darun: Thank you for contacting Scion.
Darun: How can I assist you?
Katana: Hi Darun, I have a '13 FR-s and it has the Pioneer BeSpoke
head unit in it. In the manual, it says that in order to use XM radio
with it, I need "additional hardware". Can you please tell me exactly
what hardware, and where to get it?
Katana: No-one @ dealer has any clue.
Darun: The additional hardware is an antenna and receiver.
Unfortunately, the antenna and receiver for the FR-S is not available.
Katana: OK... what is the manual talking about then?
Darun: The Pioneer Bespoke head unit is available for all 2013 Scion
models.
Katana: Is it coming out later?
Darun: It is referring to the other Scion models.
Darun: Scion has yet to announce plans to release the additional
hardware for the FR-S.
Katana: OK - how about the tC - there is an XM tuner and fit kit for
the tC? That would make it work with my FR-s I'm sure, if indeed it is
the same exact head unit.
Darun: There is one for the 2013 tC but it's not compatible with the
FR-S.
Katana: OK - but the BeSpoke head unit is the exact same model number
/ part number across the Scion line?
Darun: It is and the fit kit is that same across all models except the
FR-S.
Darun: *the
Katana: OK - so it sounds like bracketry and wire length to me.
Electrically it will work, it will just be up to my installer to
physically mount the tuner.
Darun: Is there anything else I can assist you with?
Katana: FR-s is smaller than the tC, so extra wire can be bundled up
and tucked away.
Katana: Nope - you have answered all my questions!
Darun: Glad to hear that Katana.
Darun: Thanks for chatting with Scion!
Katana: np
Darun: Have a great rest of your day.
Ok so we should just get the Scion tC hardware?

I'm going to go to Crutchfield and do this the easier less expensive way. I'm going to just buy the equipment for the tC and custom fit.

Thanks again. I just noticed that the part number for the receiver I posted last month, is the same one you posted. When I was searching, I found a thread where someone used this receiver on a base radio. So, I believe this should work on mine as well.

I appreciate you following up with Scion, getting the part numbers, and taking the time to document the install steps.

Yes - the tC/iQ fit kit (PT546-21110) is what you need for the OEM tuner install. All you need from the fit kit are

1. Data cable
2. Antenna
3. Ground wire

The tC kit has wires/cables of an appropriate length for the FR-s - those are the only variables I know of between fit kits. You don't need even a single bracket, as the tuner fits tightly in a "pocket" under the passenger seat.

I also have a 4Runner, and that fit-kit had different brackets, different length cables and stuff from the tC kit, but the same connectors on the ends that plug into the head unit and tuner module. My 4Runner has the JBL Synthesis head unit, and it even has the same plug on the back as the BeSpoke radio. Seems to be a Toyota standards thing.

I prefer the "built in XM" simplicity, but I have family and friends who went the FM modulator (Crutchfield et. al.) route, in which case I doubt if there will be any difference between the FR-s, tC, or any other car for that matter.

Just ask them to be sure! I love Crutchfield by the way - they are super to work with, and will help resolve any issues should you have any.

Please let us know how everything turns out. I'm all for easier, and less expensive :happy0180:

NP! I'm glad to help. I noticed too that you had the tuner part number while I was out searching for answers - it is the same part number for my 4Runner, and the Tundra before it as well. Seems like that is part of Toyota's common sense way of building cars - why make 6 different parts for 6 different vehicles that all do the same exact thing? It's called cost containment!

I only use 3 or 4 channels anyway! BPM being one of them.

Here's for the BeSpoke, but I think they work across all XM compatible head units - have only tested the BeSpoke though:

I will be using the built in function. The only thing it needs is an antenna. I did the same exact thing in my 370Z. The antenna usually costs less than $100. Which is why I think $270 is ridiculous.

I.O.W. the BeSpoke has an XM tuner inside the head unit?? That would be awesome to buy just a fit-kit with the antenna for $90 and be done with it. I searched forever and did not uncover that. How do you enable it once connected, or does it automatically sense that you plugged in the antenna connector? I don't remember seeing the XM antenna plug on the back, but I was looking for the data port. Maybe I need to pull the head again and look a little harder. $270/$280 would indeed be ridiculous then. Why does the BeSpoke head have the data cable connector on the back of it then? For NAV or Bluetooth or something? The Bluetooth is already working without anything plugged into the data port. The antenna in the tC fit kit would not be long enough to reach from the head to above the back window, but I suppose you could mount it above an A pillar... This is very interesting. I may soon have a tuner for sale if that is the case!

Also makes me wonder about the tC and iQ and why the fit kit for those models includes brackets for installing the tuner even though the BeSpoke head is the exact same part number...

Maybe this weekend I can dig in a little deeper and see what I can find, or maybe you could tell us how the internal tuner is activated? That would be great info!

Problem is, reading the manual provided by phenom86 above for the FR-s, (thanks!) it says in the top left notice on page 23 "An additional Genuine Toyota satellite receiver and antenna must be purchased and installed to listen to Satellite radio broadcast in your vehicle."

Yes, this is exactly what they mean when they call a Head Unit "XM Ready". Just means it needs an antenna and receiver, which aren't bad.

Also, you don't NEED a "Genuine" Toyota part for it. Whatever fits will work, Crutchfield will know from the tC. The option to switch to XM in BeSpoke should appear as soon as you plug in a working antenna and receiver. It's greyed out normally and should become live once you plug it all in.

I spoke too soon. I talked with an agent and they said the plug is a little different. Still looking into it.

Ok after researching, you DO have the right part number. But most places I've looked it's only $90.

And unfortunately you do have to buy that stupid receiver. I honestly don't know why this is so goddamn expensive. These parts are only worth about $50 at the most.

Need to buy both of these:
http://www.scionpartsmall.com/Satell...facturer_id=15
http://www.scionpartsmall.com/Satell...-2012-Scion-tC

The $170 receiver claims this though:
Note: Applies to radio head units that have SAT button only. Conflicts with Ipod interface kit and radios with embedded satellite radio (satellite radio already built into head unit). Requires vehicle specific fit kit and receiver for complete installation. Radio subscription not included.

So maybe we really only do just need the antenna?????? Because I'm almost positive we already have embedded satellite radio, I hope at least.

Someone please do this
