Good rule of thumb:

Street tires: More width is not necessary better
R-Comps: More width is usually better

My insights: I'm currently running a 235/45/17 Star Spec on a 17x8+45 RPF1 on my Mazda. It feels pretty well matched, although I am not noting a perceptible difference in terms of raw times from when I ran a 225/45 on the same wheel. However, the 225 felt much more crisp because it was just that slight bit more stretched. For a 7" wheel, I would stick with your stock 215/45. Compound > Width.

Im completely happy with 215s on my 7". Do autocross and HPDEs on it, dont feel the need for more width

If you are doing stock class autocross, do the 225/45 or the 235/40. Anything smaller is a poor choice.

There were enough at nationals I got to see both mounted. The difference IMO looked fairly minor and there is a ~$48/tire difference in favor of the 225.

Some prefer the sharper turn in of a stiffer sidewall of going more square to wheel. Not to mention 3lb per difference in RS3 from 215 to 225, due to XL rating

I agree! I went with the 225 for that reason.

With the 180 treadwear requirement, it looks like all signs point to Starspecs, unless there is a new option next year.

There will be a revised rating Hankook by January. I'll put money on it

Doubtful for two reasons. 1 the RS3 is discontinued and 2 road tire makes up such a small part of their business I doubt they would notice.
