Need advice on tire size for track duty?? - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

Ok guys i just pulled the trigger on a set of enkei rpf1's in 17x8. These will be my track duty wheels and i am shopping for tires, im stuck between sizes and need advice.

I want Hankooks RS3'S and i cant decide whether i should do 235/45/17 or 245/40/17 please help. Tire rack guy said i should go with 245's because a 45 would be to tall. Any advice? BTW they dont make them in a 235/40/17, so i have to pick one of those two sizes.

On an 8" and the RS-3? I'd go 225/45. It's just unfortunate they're heavy from being XL load.

It does compensate though that i went with one of the lightest wheels though. I pulled the trigger on both a set of federal rs*r in 235/40/17 and a set of hankooks in 225/45/17 this way i will get a better picture plus i might as well stock up on tires since this thing is so fun!!

Why no 215/45-17 consideration? Lighter and more responsive with just about as much grip.... Just came off a track day at MSR Houston running 215/45-17 Kumho Ecsta XS's (because lighter than RS-3's) and man what a chassis the FR-S has! Lightweight wheel/tire combo (less than 37 lbs) with sticky tread and responsive sidewall = AWESOME. More like what DOT-Rs on an Integra felt like to me...(other than the FWD characteristics)

With17x8 track duty I would go for 245/40/17, 235/45/17 is too tall. But 235 is the perfect width for 17X8 rim. I would try Kumho XS to see if they have 235/40/17, also a great tire for track.

Thanks for the advice man, i went with 235/40/17 on federal rs-r's and ordered a set of rs3's in 245/40/17 that way i can get a taste of both worlds.

Federal is not great track tires, if you take it to track then you are asking for trouble.

hes been in that discussion before. while they arent my choice, i think asking for trouble is a little extreme.

you should have decided on a tire size and picked the widest rim to accomodate. if you wanted fast (which i recall not being the biggest issue with you) then the wider the better (within reason). if you want fun, my bet would be somewhere around 215s. i guess its too late anyways so just enjoy what you have

Tracking and feed back is scarce on this car now.

One thing to consider when buying tires is your coilovers.

use the KW V'3 and set the car low

Given the info that's slowly trickling out from people on this forum who have actually tracked their cars, why on earth are people still so quick to assume that coil overs will automatically improve anything at all, let alone everything?

This isn't some Accord or TC. It's been extremely well up out of the box by all accounts I've read.

It will be tough to improve on and very easy to ruin if someone just throws parts at it.

Of course this is the Wheels, tires, brakes& suspension sub forum so some hellaflush is to be expected but this particular thread is about performance IIRC.

BTT - for competitive AutoX I'd favour maximizing the contact patch but for track duty I'd go for something that fits well even if it's thinner. I'd be more interested in getting a compound that's heat cycle friendly and not prone to overheating or getting greasy.

I can vouch for RE11s or AD08s on track but have no clue how the Kumhos perform.
