My RX8 consumed a quart every 2k miles. There was 1.8 quarts between high and low on the dipstick, so I wasn't constantly topping it off, rather, I'd add a quart at 2k miles, change the oil at 4k miles, add another quart at 6k, change oil at 8k, etc.

I had a 2004 and experienced no problems. Obviously that's anecdotal, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy another rotary (if they improve efficiency, and put it in a lighter car).

I never premixed, but I hit fuel cutoff (9500 RPM in the RX8) at least once per drive

Some TDI owners swear by premixing as well. Since we're off topic anyway, BTW two of my friends' Mk5 GTIs burned a quart every 1000 miles. One of them tried to get VW to fix the engine over it, but was told that's normal consumption. He ended up trading the car in for a Mustang. The other owner decided to live with it and still happily drives his GTI. Supposedly this was a common issue that VW quietly fixed a few years back.
