Good results with the eibachs. Looks like the car should have came like that from the manufacturer.

FWIW, you do NOT need to remove the bolt holding the rear LCA to the rear hub assembly. Removing/loosening the nut is all that is needed as it removes the compression force against the rear shock. Then simply have someone put force on the rear brake drum and the damper comes right out, no problem at all

Pics of two "proper" tools for top hat shaft nut removal will be posted in here soon. Darren can incorporate in his initial thread as needed/desired.

It's so easy when you remove the control arm bolts, though, that I just do it. I usually do my installs solo, so don't have an extra person to hold the brake anyway.

Look forward to the photos for properly removing the strut hats.

In the rear a helper is nice anyways to avoid dropping the damper

The drivers side bolt wouldn't come out in the 2 seconds we tried (hitting other suspension arms, gave up pushed down on brake and removed damper. Seemed easier to me

Will post the pics today if I get a second.

There was a thread in the suspension section about a guy that ruined his shocks by tightening the top nut down with an impact wrench. Apparently you are suppose to support the strut somehow to keep it from turning to avoid damaging the seals. How did you handle this with your install?

That's what I'll post pics of soon. I used two different tools (well I really just used one but took pics of two). One was provided by Tony Jackson @ Eibach who was at an event I run and that Eibach was a Sponsor of, and the other is a simple pass thru ratchet.

Pics of the proper tools. Note, these both require spring compressors to be safe and I took these pics after the spring swap (was in a hurry to do the springs between the end of track sessions and our event banquet), normally you wouldn't use them on the car except to break the bolt loose.

First, the tool brought by Eibach. Not sure where you would find this one but you could make it (weld 3/8" or 1/2" drive socket to a steel bar):

Second, the GearRatchet made by Gearwrench:

And looking through the hole in the middle of the gearratchet setup:

Bah.

Not my fault Subaru didn't seal the engine bay worth crap. That's ~6,200 miles of driving when those pics were taken last tuesday (~7900 now).

The engine bay might get cleaned once a year.. at best.

so it's safe to use an impact to remove the top nut from the strut, just as long as you don't use an impact when replacing the nut during reassembly, correct?

It's not that tight to use an impact. Just secure the center shaft with an Allen key and a curved box wrench... Might have to modify the wrench to get in there... Make sure the shock has the spring compressors on.
