Well, it's lovely to know that Scion is knowingly upgrading people to this radio they know is crap.

Why not just leave it off the option list? For the price of the bespoke, I could have had a good aftermarket radio with navigation. Considering how cheap GPS components must be these days (they're built into everything), I don't know why their plan was to rely on the gps components, maps and internet connection of one particular phone.

It doesn't bother me much since I've never met a built-in navigation system I like. I just don't like being obviously mislead. I didn't bother to rear the fine print on the radio which should have said '* Advertised features are useless with the iphone and approximately 70% more useless without an iphone.'

BeSpoke 2.0 will be out for the 2014 model year and it is actual navigation, not routing, plus it moves up to a larger screen with everything as touch screen. I work for Toyota and learned all of this at my FR-S training, so I figured I would share with you guys....
There's nothing like getting fucked as an early adopter.

Well it is advertised as routing, most sales people do not want to create an objection on saying it is just routing, unless you ask about it. Scion apparently didn't have enough time to get it complete together for the FRS Launch, so the current BeSpoke is 1.0, and next year we get a revised 2.0. As with all new vehicle and equiptment, they improve and get better as the years go on.

I'm sure the FRS will get better as the years come, but I love mine and don't regret the decision to purchase it first year at all!

I'm ok with things getting better with time, but this is the head-unit equivalent of giving me a flat-4 with only two functioning pistons and telling me that the 2014 model will have those pistons installed and firing.

I am going to take a giant guess here that there will be no software update for the bespoke v -1.0 that they're selling right now.

Maybe someone will crack it and install Linux on it. Whoda thunk that the open-source community would be the only hope for getting in-dash navigation from an $850 touch screen radio.

Well, at least the screen makes the interior look a bit more pretty.

On a serious note, very helpful video review... Thank you, OP.

Yeah it's a shame. Where in Houston? I'm around the League City area. Seems like there are a bunch of Houstonians on here.

'routing'

that's ridiculous

the reality is that people pay money for NAVIGATION... you know, you find an address and it reroutes it if needed... this is 2012 is it not where a cheap no name China gps can nav without issues

the likelihood that a salesperson will 'correct' a customer and jeopardise a sale by trying to differentiate 'routing' vs. 'navigation' is farcical

what if you dont have an iphone?

i'm surprised such a silly system can even leave the concept stage

did these guys not look at what Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine etc. do in double din nav?

Thanks for the excellent review.

I think the marketing of the BeSpoke was a low point for Toyota. It was sold as a wonderful "app radio", but the truth is that it is a very weak kluged-together system. I decided to wait for the really amazing stuff that will come out in the next year or so.

Yeah, I've always been a bit disappointed with navigation systems but this is ridiculous. As others have said, it blows my mind that they would even bother releasing and trying to sell such a thing and I feel bad for those who were suckered into buying it. They better come out with a real navigation system with SiriusXM radio for next year.

The premise of it is that the more people use it, the more data is collected about the current state of traffic and that way it can vary your route or give you accurate data on how long it would take to reach your destination!

Try it, I doubt you'll be disappointed!
I love my iPhone and won't be switching to android anytime soon. However, I had the opposite experience with Waze. It's terrible. It tells me to turn way to late and I get POI alerts from things that are completely unrelated to my driving route. I mean, why would I need to know that there was an accident 10 miles opposite of my direction? But it's free so you get what you pay for. I'd much recommend the Navigon app instead but since iOS 6 is coming out next month, the new built-in turn-by-turn navigation will make it unnessary. From testing the beta the last few months, it works freakin great!

The Mazda 3 has a navigation screen the size of a couple postage stamps, and horrible zoom levels so that you can't even see street names when you're coming up to them.

It's disturbing to know that there is something worse out there.

I am so thankful you made this video! its the only way Scion and pioneer will now to upgrade there POS that they gave us.. I'm extremely dissapointed as well.. I was also fortunate enough to not actually have received my Ipod/aux cable lol..... for a "navagation head unit" this really is a letdown... gosh this makes me want to call someone and complain now lol..
