$40 - $45 per hour.
Refinishing of an entire car with color (2012 Subaru Impreza for example) is approximately 40 hours. Now deduct for base color application and I'm sure you'll be well under 30 hours. You would need to then include trim removal.

Is that their door rate or the prevailing rate for the area? Big difference. $65-$85 is what shops charge on exotic/high end luxury/specialty/custom vehicles which these cars are faaar from. Shops have a tendancy of over-inflating their door rates when in actuality they charge alot less. Especially if the other similar shops in the area are much lower. It's kinda like a look how much I post what I charge thing.
If Body Shops are charging $80/hr for body work, then what is the Mechanical rate @ the BMW/MB/Lexus dealers......$250+/hr? It's usually pretty relative.

Bodyshops, even poor ones, out here are upwards of $75 / hr. High end dealership labour rates are upwards of $125 - 140.

A great way to protect the paint and/or change your car color is to vinyl wrap it. It will stay for three to five years and can be removed from the car without any residue left or damage to the factory paint job. It is also a hell of a lot cheaper than re-painting, figure about 3 to 5K for a full wrap in any color you like and you can even have your flames or racing stripes printed right on wrap. You can design your own and get a great listing of local wrap shops for bids custom-car-wraps
