Scion originally was introduced as a youthful brand for younger adults to get into and modify simple vehicles to their taste and give them a sense of individuality in the car world without having to pay a whole lot. The vehicles they originally started with were the Scion XB(Toyota BB everwhere else) and the Scion XA(Toyota IST) then they added the TC which is similar to the Toyota Avensis chassis wise. More recently the IQ and FRS(GT86) were added to the lineup.

The brand gets a lot of flack as many of the beginner drivers or hipsters modify their vehicles in poor taste or usually have no idea what they are doing/talking about when it comes to automotive modification. This stigma has led to an almost downright hatred of the brand from most automotive enthusiasts.

FINALLY!!! Someone gets it!

I remember when the brand first was introduced. I was working for Toyota Transport right after high school for the summer. I was like "WTF, that's a bad idea. Ugly effin cars"

Everyone assumes this. Assumes.

We just had a meet of over 20 FRS drivers here in BC and the majority of people there were more into learning about properly tracking the car than street racing or modding it into the ground.

One other point, I was interested in swapping badges until I saw a botched job. Not... worth... the... risk.

Thanks mate. Would give a proper thanks but cant find the button to do it on the page.

I guess the FRS should help improve the brand image somewhat

Make sure you dont look at any of the parts on the car.
You do know the development history of this car right? Do you really think Subaru would build a RWD sports car by their own volition? Subaru even had to change their company slogan since this car goes against their most fundamental philosophy, i.e., AWD stability.

Toyota spawned the idea for this car and called the shots from the beginning. We are driving a Subaru-made Toyota.

I am guessing that most of these are selling to people with mo particular love or nostalgia for the AE86.

I don't see much connection between the FR-S and the AE86. It's bigger, heavier and more powerful. I honestly see the car more as the successor to the S13 Silvia/240SX. It's the same weight, designed as a long-hood f/r sports coupe, has the same power as an SR20DET-equipped model and the engine (although obviously H4 instead of I4) even has the same bore/stroke as the SR20.

In any case, Toyota could have built the FR-S today whether or not they had ever built the AE86. It's not as if there's an unbroken chain of light rwd cars from the AE86 to the FR-S.

I will agree. A well done TC has never been a bad thing. Rado's TC is the best one though.

Based on your reasoning, there is no possible way that the 2011 STI is Related to the GC WRX STI either (other than an uninterrupted chain of production).

Which, of course, is something that Toyota can't claim on the FR-S.

I'm happy they built it, but I'm not about to get all nostalgic over their marketing talk. I never even watched Initial D.

Me myself would like to see a Cat-Back 86 i.d. exhaust, over badging on the car. SEMA vendors are holding product till November This is something to be mad about.

Toyota's name is on the engine because Subaru does not have a DI motor (yet). The manual transmission is an Aisin 6-speed based off the AZ6, but is called the T70(?), it's a Toyota-modified design. The automatic is based off the IS-F. There are a few other design cues that you could say are Toyota's call (equal header lengths vs.the Subaru unequal lengths).

I don't see why so many people think because Subaru STAMPS something it becomes their's. Hell, the Toyota wheel caps have SUBARU branded on the underside, does that make them SUBARU wheel caps?

If the next-gen WRX was (for some reason) made in a Toyota factory and had TOYOTA all over the chassis/parts but were clearly Subaru-designed chassis/suspension, would you call it a Toyota with a Subby badge? I don't think so.

Says you! Lol jk but i wasn't talking about that car because the tC wasn't around when Scion Launched. Which was in 2003.

I actually thought the tC was pretty nice compared to the rest of the lineup. Wouldn't buy one though...I had a DC5

The tC isn't terrible (although I prefer the looks of last generation to this one), but it's not nearly as awesome as the fuse concept Scion was showing as the claimed replacement for the tC.

It looks like the only thing they used from this concept is the rear pillar, which looks awful on the tC.
