Back From The Dead
|
I had a cobalt SS turbo with a lot of money spent on it... ~350 hp...
With that said, the lack of power doesn't bother me very much, but a little more torque would be nice. I knew what I was getting into tho and don't regret it for a second. |

I came from an AP1 and haven't looked back. Although the torque numbers are about the same, the FR-S peaks lower than the S. This thing is faster down low when just driving around town. The power is more liniar, so you don't get that suddent VTEC kick, but it still pulls pretty decent up top. With full exhaust, you should be able to keep up with an S.

my VR4 made 375 Lbs Ft at 4000 RPM on the wheels......with bigger turbos upgrade. It is 450 AWHP now compare to stock 228 AWHP.
The 1000 RPM later Torque into the power range is So sad. Until 4000 RPM then I can enjoy driving it. I have driven many other cars with high HP and low end torque...especially those honda civic and S2000, same with Celica. There is not much different that you can tell from a lighter chasis, but if you are driving a low end torque car, you won't feel very happy. The good thing I heard is that 85% of the FRS torque is available at 3500 RPM, which makes it 135 trq Ft. It is probably good, i never test drove one. In my conclusion, the Torque is what drive the car, is what make your face smile, is also what make passing power on a high way, or out of danger. I love Toyota, my whole family has like 6 Toyota vehicles from SUV to Pickup to Camry. I was Eagerly waiting for this FRS to come out, but I was disappointed when they announced the Specifications of the car. I would buy it with no regret if It was to rate at 250 HP, and 200 Trq. But nah it was so under powered. There are newer Turbo system for after market and such. Also new super charger is reported to be on it way from TRD. Plus, the Release series of TC. I am more likely to wait for the Release series of FRS and the availability of the TRD supercharger to do 1/ insurance.... 2/warranty 3/factory option, for no headache 4/review from drivers, and availability of after market experiences to play with it |

I should have pointed out that its not so much needing power to have fun as it is needing power for daily driving like passing and on ramps. Test drives generally are not long enough to get a full idea how the car will react in different circumstances.
As far as the v6 Mustang comment. When I had my AP1 I had a 2007 V6 Mustang as my daily. It was great for a DD but certainly lacked in the fun factor. I would never recommend a V6 Mustang over what I would consider a true sports car in the FR-S. I rented a newer V6 and it was just no fun at all. The Mustang is a boat and without gobs of low end torque its just blah. |

Have had 6 new Corvettes over the years, the last one being a 2006 C6.
Have not missed the horsepower at all!

Had an evo 8 with intake exhaust and tune. Little beefier in the power department but to me the FR-S is just as much if not more fun.
I can wring it out without breaking 100mph in no time flat and getting pulled over Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

This has been a pretty repeated topic for the past 2 years, plenty of us here are coming from cars pumping out 350+whp.
This car was specifically designed to contrast sports cars with power. In early development interviews the origins of this car was to produce the same performance and feeling of a high performance car..with none of the performance features. IE turbo and high grip tires, and AWD. The Designers thought that cars today relied on too much power and technology that sports vehicles today became "boringly fast", and a solution they found was to bring back an old formula from the 80s, back into the 21st century. From my seat time in a few Zx6s and comparing it to S2ks, 350z, S13, S14, FC rx7, gen coupe, they hit their mark. Power is definitely something you should worry about in todays industry. But when looking at a FRS or BRZ..leave those thoughts behind you, this car is in a world of its own. when people ask me how was it I say, "never been happier driving a slower sports car"

This car is perfectly fine in daily traffic. The power is plenty for merging into traffic and passing on the highway. The key, power-wise, is to keep it at 5K or higher. On-ramps are further helped by the cornering as you can carry more speed down them if needed. But so far, I have yet to go full-throttle to merge with highway traffic. There are tons of cars out there with less power, or worse power/weight ratios that handle daily traffic every day without issue. So I don't see why there's so much worry.
The only issue is "angry passing". These cars don't have the immediate punch to lay down a pass on a dotted yellow like a high-torque car. Normally this isn't a problem, unless you think the other driver will accelerate to prevent you passing. So you have to keep this in mind and be sure you have plenty of room to pass if the other guy might be an @$$hole. |

Was a little disappointed when I first drove it. It handles awesome but think it could still use a little more power. Nothing a turbo or supercharger wont fix for me.
It is fun to drive but still doesn't compare to my mazda... the mazda still wins the biggest smiles award |
