This is fascinating. I have had the problem for years. It sounds like you are on the right track. Please update with any progress.

Turns out the 86 unit doesn't have a normal shunt.

In the name of science I ordered a Prius EPAS module that has the shunt, a complete 86 steering column / EPAS motor / EPAS module, and a Prius column to play with.

I also emailed this company and see if they have any advice: https://us.dcemotorsport.com/epas/

edit: Don't know pricing yet, I expect it to be absolutely eye-watering

That was my exact guess too.

I'll post the price when I get the reply from their US office. Given it is the last thing that irritates me about the car I'll just get one if it isn't like $3.5k

Are those EPAS setups from DCE motorsport used in any of the GT86 racing series ? Seems crazy to me that they make a plug and play solution for our car.

Lol, it is funny you bring that up. I happened upon this post today while digging around:

DCE did the harnesses for the GR86 Cup cars. I am wondering if they also put this kit into the cars, unfortunately I don't know the right people to find out for sure.
