Hopefully my latest struggle can add something to the collective knowledge about TPMS in the 2nd gen BRZ.
My car is a '22 BRZ. I got a set of mounted 1st gen wheels with winter tires, including TPMS sensors. I think it's fair to assume that the wheels' TPMS sensors were left alone and are stock 1st gen. I'm using a firmware-updated TS501. After fudging around with the ODB relearn with both the 1st gen wheel tires set and 2nd gen, I found the following info: 1st gen sensors/transmitters are probably "T5". The TS501 has a database of sensor types based on cars. Any Make+model+sensor option that list the sensor information as "PMV-C010" would recognize (able to scan) my 1st gen wheels. Here's the kicker... It seems like my TPMS control module in the 2nd gen (Denso HYQ23ABG) CANNOT receive any signal from the sensor on the first gen wheels (PMV-C010). 2nd gen sensors are of the "T6" variety. Someone previously said that the sensor's FCC ID from the manual is PMV-E000. I can confirm that this works, AS WELL AS PMV-C015. On the TS501, two of the options for Toyota Camry, 01/2020-12/2021 and 09/2014-12/2021 (PMVE000 and PMVC015), recognize my 2nd gen stock sensors. I can confirm that the OBD relearn process works (when I rewritten the sensor IDs on the ECU) Is it safe to assume at this point that the T5 sensors would not work with the 2nd gen? Any example of T5 working? I would love to start compiling a list of FCCIDs of the T6 that works. Edit: Since I found multiple procedures listed for the ODB relearn process out there, I'm gonna put a brief version of what worked for me here. 1) Scan the IDs into your TPMS tool 2) Hook the tool up to the car via ODB (you want the car to be in the "Ignition ON" and engine off state) 3) Write the IDs into either "Main" or "2nd set" 4) Make sure the car is on the right set by reading out the current TPMS ID, do the 3x in 3s switch if you're not 5) Unhook the tool from the car and rescan the wheels (you do not need to perform an ignition Off and On step) Last edited by RandoUser; 12-04-2022 at 12:05 AM. |

Does anyone know if there's a laptop based solution for this? I'd rather buy some pricier software and a laptop if it gives me more access than a $200 device that only does tires.

thanks for the useless sarcasm, I was hoping that there was a solution for this like there is with my Mini and my dads BMW. I guess Toyota locks stuff down?
EDIT: Looks like Toyota techstream is the software, but a license is insanely expensive. I figured there'd be an open source solution already. Last edited by BioRebel; 01-12-2023 at 10:46 AM. |

For $320 you can get the Autel TS508 along with 8 programmable sensors. If you already have the tool then the sensors are $30 each.. but buying the tool and 4 sensors ends up being $395, so for $75 less you get 4 extra sensors in the package deal. Again, if you've already got the OEM sensors for the second set of wheels then this probably isn't the best route if those can work, but for anybody buying new wheels without sensors this is the way to go. |

It should be possible to sniff/wiretap the communication between an Autel and a car, make an Arduino-based device to plug into the car and the laptop (<$50 budget) and send the same commands (with different sensor IDs) to reprogram the car.
Pros: + Much cheaper than Autel, especially for a one time thing + Can reuse the device for another project (e.g. data acquisition for RaceChrono) Cons: - Someone needs to reverse engineer it (I can do that, but don't see an incentive yet) - Users will need basic programming/soldering skills - You'll need to take a photo of the inside half of each sensor to record the IDs, vs Autel that can read IDs even if the sensor is already covered by the tire

At this point I may just get the Autel TS501 ($200) which lets me read the sensor Id's and then set them (as discussed earlier in this thread we can use the camry setting to set the codes), and apparently if I do it right it'll work with the "2 sets" functionality. That being said, I have found a sketchy copy of Techstream. I might load it onto a VM to purge it and then get a cheap burner laptop. |

I bought a TS501, programmed in a second set of sensors with ease today (once I learned how to use the device, it's a fairly annoying to use interface but whatever)

Do you know if this work on the Gen1 FRS as well? that would be a great option

Resurrecting this thread to ask what I think is a new question:
Has anyone verified if 2nd Gen TPMS sensors are backwards compatible with 1st Gen cars? I have a 1st gen track car and 2nd gen dual duty car that I'd like to get TPMS for that works for both if possible. Seems that 1st gen TPMS is definitely not compatible with 2nd gen cars; how about 2nd gen TPMS with 1st gen cars? |
