Just to close this thread. I ended up taking it to my mechanic and it turns out there was some corrosion on the battery terminals that they cleared up and started fine after that. I installed the head unit after and was all good. The car never had a problem starting before but I guess it tipped it over the edge with this install.

radar detectors are generally wired exactly the same as dash cameras. there's usually a barrel jack input. that barrel jack is normally wired to switched/acceessory power so it comes on when the car comes on, and shuts off with the car.

really simple devices. but there's no telling what happens with some people's wiring methods

This also proves that there are different procedures for measuring battery voltage at the battery. Battery posts versus battery terminals.

At least he didn't replace his alternator and starter like so many have!

oh, the good old days where coil-on-plug didn't exist, and starter solenoids were easy to jump with a screwdriver...
