they never use their claws on the car. I've had about 5 cars now where street kitties would always sleep on top of the hood and even after years on multiple cars and cats there were never any swirls let alone scratches. They carefully use their jelly-like paws to not scratch our cars. Very cute.

That's all fine until something scares the cat, and it instinctively reacts and tries to escape. They dig in the claws to get traction, hence leaving scratches. I've seen this a few times, thankfully never on any of my cars though.
