The car will run (undamaged) with a lower grade of gas in it. I'm willing to bet half the 86s sold were delivered with the wrong grade gas in them. I'm about 90% sure mine was a victim. Sounds like the dealer is trying to do the right thing. Ask for something reasonable.

20$ says "emptying the gas tank" means letting it idle for the weekend. Dealers are not your friend, and sales/service are bitter enemies who hate dealing with each other.

And just idling the engine won't do anything to it. If anything, its the best option since the car is under minimal stress. |

That dealer is just plain awful, but guess it's too late to do much about that now.
Personally, I would tell them to screw the extra day, you want the car now, and do what everyone here has suggested. Either just run the car on regular for this tank and make sure not to do it again and/or use that octane booster. Tell them you want something like mud guards, or extra year of oil changes or something stupid and get out asap (though idk if you would want to go there for any future service).. I also know that the FR-S is a great car, but this might be a good learning experience, cause you got hosed pretty bad here on both their stupidity with the car, and your trade-in + experience. I went to one dealer, left me sitting alone for over 30 minutes while at least 4-5 salesmen were literally hitting a beach ball back and forth, finally came to me and rushed me through the process, and were gonna give me 5500 for my 2007 TC. Grabbed my things, called another dealer, that very night, gave me 8300 for my TC, 2.8% APR, and got my payments well under what I was willing to pay. Did they make money off of me? Sure. Could I possibly squeezed a little bit more? Sure. But the entire experience was so much better, and I didn't get completely ripped off. You only got 1700 more for your car that was 3 years newer than mine, and almost 40,000 miles less than mine. Though I kept my car clean, there was a significant dent over the passenger front tire from a hit and run in a parking lot.. You are getting treated like shit cause they know if you step away they will sell the car anyway, and they are getting away with such crap customer service.. |

Regarding asking them to give me the vehicle as is... they refused originally because they first said the engine costs 16K (i hardly doubt so...) and letting me go w/ the car in those conditions would mean they are totally liable if the engine f*cks up over the long run.... they are not taking those chances they said.... and obviously the paperwork hasn't cleared yet.. so technically they still 'own' the vehicle.... and my credit was ran.. such PAIN!! |

the gas shouldnt be a deal breaker! if you follow the manual and keep it under 4000rpms for the break in it shouldnt matter what gas is in there.
i say go get the car and just burn it off driving normally around town.

As long as you are okay with your monthly payments, thats all that matters. You will love the car, and these stressors will be forgotten! Again, something like mud flaps, wheel locks, oil changes, maybe a spoiler, gas card, or hell maybe you could squeeze them for a detail job (private not their own) which would be great |

jesus. there is enough idiocy running rampant on this forum to make someone sick. the car will run ABSOLUTELY fine on 87, the ecu will just pull a little ignition timing to compensate. this isn't the 1980's anymore...

Yeah... I would have just taken the car and driven it under 4K and just dealt with the few days of 87 octane OR syphoned out the gas and used it in another car. No need to leave it at the dealer for them to deal with how they please.

One tank won't hurt it. The car is designed for higher octane (at least 91). Using lower grade gasoline consistently will eventually gum up the works and cause you to have to replace parts and fix things earlier. Yes, the engine can retard the timing to attempt to prevent knocking, but the car will suffer both in power and longevity. Numerous experts have weighed in on this. |
