Yea definitely do not recommend bolting to the floor unless you like fusing the vertebrae of your spine together

A properly designed and installed bolt-in roll bar is fine. Here is a perfect example of one, with a car that doesn't even have a roof. This is the same 4-pt bar I used on my track rat Miata.

And for those about to say something dumb, it's a Miata with a hardtop. But the fiberglass hardtops are in no way structural. They are purely aerodynamic when it comes to track work.

Thanks for sharing. I get particularly triggered when people argue they don't need a roll bar because they don't go to the high speed tracks. You can still easily roll a car at 30mph if you go off into soft dirt like the way you did. Glad to know you got out ok.

No I don’t mean a bolt in bar, I mean the people who bolt them to the floor of the car. With the shoulder straps going down to the level of the seat rails.

yes of course, full HANS, fire suit, etc.

I would do that no matter what - but I would have to as its required at all the tracks I run.

I appreciate everyone's concern, but I have been tracking cars for years. My safety equipment is only top-rated/certified and installed by the best race shop in town.

I am not risking my life for my hobby.

thanks for looking out though

But you did say "harness bar".
Or did you mean "roll bar / half cage with a harness bar"?

yeah, in my head "harness bar" = roll bar (not a full cage)

Hence our confusion, because a harness bar is the little cheap bar you that typically ties into the bolts of the seatbelts. And provides no roll over protection, it is literally just a bar behind the back seats to attach the shoulder straps to.

This is a harness bar.

Thankfully that wasn't me. The only wreck I've had on track is on two wheels, that one was fairly painful, I was unconscious so long they stopped the session.

I just wanted to share that video as one of many example, that even in convertibles, a well designed/installed roll bar will offer roll over protection.

Then you have poor ones, installed by shady shops, where the plates aren't in double-shear, etc. If you look in one in the pictures you can actually see where the main hoop punched through the floorpan.

Yeah that example of a shitty roll bar install is legendary. We use it in our safety schpiel in our schools at OTA. We actually go one step further and ask what roll bar you have installed and have guidelines on how it should be built if not an-off-the-shelf unit.

Proper roll bars/hoops and cages are SO important and yet you get people who magically do it all for 40-50% less money? Run for the hills.

Any recommendations for a roll bar in Southern ON?

Unfortunately, I don't know any off the shelf roll bar suppliers here in Ontario.

There are quite a few shops who can fabricate them for you though but you need to supply them the specifications and/or design. These are usually dictated by SCCA or CASC in Canada.
