Misaligned gear shifter after transmission reinstall

This weekend, I replaced my clutch and flywheel. I believe that my shifter is now misaligned. I think that the reverse gear is engaged when going into the 1st gear position, as I can't move to the 2nd gear position. How do I realign the shifter and linkage properly? HELP!

It does this without the lockout plate installed.

I just remembered that I didn't install one of the two MTech shifter springs. The one under the big nut is still stock.

All the answers to your questions are there. See how wide the holes are in the top plate? Critical and relatively easy adjustment.

I think I was just over thinking it, worried I had messed up somewhere. There's just such a small gap between reverse and 3-4. Might have just got it. Thanks to everyone who replied!

Excellent. Now, here's my take. Once you've found the first and second gear gates, align the plate so that so that the lockout foot rests against the plate when the gearshift is exactly in the middle of both first and second gear gates. It's a shortcut to using feeler gauges but I argue that, if one is careful, it's actually a better technique. The published procedure attempts to minimize opportunity for error.

YMMV. Getting the adjustment right is important to avoid wear in the long term. The actual parts for the gate mechanism are relatively delicate.

edit: When I say middle, I mean when the transmission is in gear. Engage first gear. Find the middle and adjust the plate. Do the same for second. It's an iterative process because the plate moves around so much and it's a single adjustment for both gates.

Tip: a quick shot of black spray paint, before you remove the lockout plate, will show you exactly where the plate goes when re-installing it.
