I think it is just something rattling but it's not the shifter knob.

Well it was awhile ago so I never did figure it out. However, in 2015 at the end of May I blew my engine (turbo'd). I think a rocker might have popped loose and locked open a valve. It was a 2012 build motor, so who knows. I believe newer engines have slightly longer valves and enlarged? oil passages for the rockers among other things.

I have rattle noise coming from the engine around the same rpm. It sounds like valve rocker noise, but only between 3000 to 4000rpm. Its quiet at idle or while driving at most speeds. Did you find out what it is?

I discovered that my sound comes from the clutch pedal - master cylinder. If, while the rattle is occurring, you lightly tap the clutch pedal, does it quit?

That's interesting. I have the same noise on my 2017. It has been present pretty much as long as I can remember and I bought it new.

It comes and goes but only seems to make noise on throttle in certain situations. Did it bone stock and now header/tuned.

The car is mostly stock with 140000 km, it has done it for at least 100000 km, I first noticed it on the highway while accelerating, but now I can hear it driving in the city while accelerating moderately. I believe it is coming from the side of the engine near the high pressure fuel pump / clutch master cylinder. I have seen some videos of cars with the same noise. It seems to have some connection to the phase change of the VVT? or maybe when the port injection and Direct injection turn on / off?. No one has been able to identify it and fix it. I will try an find the videos with the noise. Everyone knows about the crickets but this sounds worst, but not as bad as "rod knock"
