Last time I had the trans out, I used a dremel to grind down the shelf left behind in the middle of the socket as the ball wore into it. Then I lapped the ball and socket a little to verify that where once was a shelf was now a tiny bit lower such that the only contact surface between the two was just outside that flat region on the ball. Used poor man's Prussian blue, a blue Sharpie. It works okay.
