60K for the plugs, I'm pretty sure. I remember thinking it was rather quick for Iridium plugs. They are usually good for 90K-100K.

I've had a Subaru mechanic look at the clearance. He says it no tighter than the rear plugs on Subaru's 6cyl boxer motors which can be done with the engine in-place.

I haven't had the skid plate off yet, but if the engine mounts are anything like the usal Subaru ones, lifting the engine would be a piece of cake. You don't have axles or even the dog-bone to deal with. Again, I haven't confirmed this, but lifting the engine may be as simple as undoing two nuts and using a floor jack under the oil pan. If so, it could actually be faster to do it that way than to swap the plugs with the engine in the car.

The Scion service manager is either too stupid to look it up because he's used to spark plug changes every 30K for crap like the xa and xb, or he's just trying to get you to buy premature service to make an extra buck...

All Subarus basically say you have to pull the engine, but in reality it isn't the case. This was discussed at length in another thread where a ton of previous Subaru owners basically agrees it should be easy enough with a flex head ratchet, long sockets, and swivel adapter maybe. My STi didn't need to and the manual said it was required as well. Just takes removing the air box and washer tank on that, I'm sure this car should be similar.

I knew I should have got a Prius!!!! I kiiidd I kiiidd! I'm going to say that I'll be following the service manual 60k unless something is absolutely wrong. I doubt they made this such a super difficult task to do. I wouldn't fret it!

Yeah, this was actually one of the first things I looked at when the service manual started floating around here. You actually have to take quite a few things off.
A mechanic buddy of mine says he call pull a Subaru boxer in just over an hour, so I'm not super worried about it.
I think your wrong on the mileage though, it should be a bit higher.

Don't forget the requisite cursing, its an important tool.

This is according to the manual
however, techs are pretty resourceful. Most likely people will find shortcuts to do this faster and easier

I bet scion made the engine either easy to lift/remove from the engine bay to facilitate this normal maintnence.
The bonnet can angle straight up to allow easy engine removal

Isn't 60K still kind of early for a spark plug change? I have 110K on my '04 corolla and still haven't changed the plug yet

When we did the header, it was that simple. Actually, they just loosened the bolts and pushed up on the engine. lol. done.

In the aviation industry, we call this "highly technical talk". It is essential to getting the job done.

Yeah I'm not sure why people are screaming about lifting the engine up, it takes about 5 minutes. The hardest part is getting the protective cover crap off the bottom.

I'm hoping my usual contraption of swivel joints and extensions I use on the FXT works well for the BRZ spark plugs, but at the rate I'm driving the car (1100 miles in 6 weeks) I won't have to worry about it for a long time!

Here's hoping someone'll have made a DIY for this by the time I get an FR-S.. sounds simple enough from what everyone is saying, but I'd feel much better attempting this with photos & instructions.
