7500 mile service done. 30k will suck.

Just took my car in for its 7500 mile service. Yeah, that would be 1000 miles per week for me since I got it! The service wasn't an issue, but the service manager and I talked for a while and he told me something.... unfortunate.

A spark plug change is required at 30,000 miles (see edit below). Now, of course, Scion Service Boost runs out at 25k. But here's the kick in the nuts... The engine must be lifted in order to access and change the plugs! I looked down at the head and, sure enough, its right up next to the frame rail. Now, I don't know how much will need to be disconnected in order to do this, but I would say that the engine will need to be lifted about 6" to gain access. While I can access an engine hoist, this sounds like the suck for normal maintenance. This will likely be a $500 service at the dealer...

EDIT: Dealer was apparently wrong about the 30k service. Plugs are changed at 60k according to the manual.

I live in cincy, if you need, we can tackle this together

I knew the engine had to be lifted, but I didn't know we were going to do it as early as 30k!

What?? Aww man, that sounds terrible. So approximately every 1 1/2 - 2 years this...

Hopefully my travel will die down and this at least won't be until next year! :)

haha mine wont be until next year, but I have access to a little more help than you do it sounds. Luckily, the father-in law is a diesel mechanic, and has access to a lot of tools/knowledge that I do not possess

I believe that it manual says every 60,000 for replacement.

At least that's what it says for the BRZ, with iridium plugs you should be able to get at least 90k

Gives me a good reason to check/replace anything that looks worn. The other benefit is, that you could remove the engine to do some upgrades at the same time.

I bet scion made the engine either easy to lift/remove from the engine bay to facilitate this normal maintnence.

DrDuquette 07-24-2012 07:24 PM

Is this really true? 30k!!!! What the hell is the reason for that when most cars are good for 100k.

SkullWorks 07-24-2012 07:26 PM

My car is gonna do so much dyno/R&D (actual R&D) that I was planning ondrilling thru the frame rails and welding pipe back into the holes so I have access to change plugs, since we all (should) know that the stock heat range wont hold out beyond a couple PSI for boosted applications.

You're right. The service manager told me 30k. I will have to consult my owner's manual, but I can't imagine why the FR-S would differ from the BRZ.

Something does not sound right or left.

Manual says 60K...Look on page 75 of the service manual overview
