AT. I have never learned to drive a MT. I'd love to, but didn't want to purchase something I didn't know how to pull off a lot, lol. Maybe one day...

Brother tried teachin me once in his little nissan pickup, and it wasn't pretty. Didn't want to look like I was hittin hydros down the road and mess something up so I've stuck with AT.

Oh, I sure didn't get the AT for gas mileage, and it's a good thing I'm not on Fuelly, because I'd be dragging the AT's numbers down. I drive in traffic, and I drive like a lunatic (within legal limits, of course... barely).

According to EPA, CR-Z's AT gets better MPG, but according to fuelly.com, CR-Z's MT gets better MPG. FR-S/BRZ is getting similar result as CR-Z. These makes me think that EPA test has some disadvantages to these cars and I wanted to mention that so that people stop trusting EPA and automatically think that AT gets better real life MPG than MT.
It does have a difference (I won't call it a disadvantage cause it really isn't), it tests both transmissions equally, as I pointed out though a lot of people get an AT because they drive in a lot of stop and go traffic, that's going to skew the numbers in favor of the MT in comparisons like fuelly because stop and go traffic will significantly lower your fuel economy, if you were to put an MT in those same stop and go situations it would be noticeably worse than the AT. I can guaranty that the percentage of AT's that a regularly driven in stop and go traffic is significantly higher than the MT's.

The only way to get a more accurate comparison of which gets better fuel economy, the AT or MT is to get an MT and AT drive both cars at the same time on the same several thousand mile road trip, filling up at all the same stops, stopping at the same lights, accelerating at the same rate, sitting in the same traffic, etc, and if you did that I would be the difference between the two would be the same as the EPA numbers with in a few percentage margin of error.

Something like fuelly will never give you a fair comparison no matter how large the sample size as people by AT's and MT's for different reasons and the cars are not going to be subjected to similar driving situations the majority of the time.

I used to be biased towards driving only manual transmissions, and I suppose I still am. My very first car had the tiptronic paddle shifting transmission, and as much as I regretted getting it over a true manual... It actually taught and introduced to me the idea of a sports car.

I attend track days often, and I see both transmission choices from participants out there... I've driven an auto transmission (not DCT), and it really makes the driving experience easier compared to shifting / downshifting in a manual, and it's just one less thing that you're doing while driving. I seemed to pay attention to corner workers better, and I was more comfortable in looking ahead while driving the auto... Because I was focused on only steering, braking, and the beloved gas pedal.

With that being said, wanting to drive with a true manual transmission is more about driving feel and experience more than anything else, I think. Yes, it's an additional tool to learn with at the same time. Most importantly, the reason why I choose it every opportunity thus far is because I want to feel the car better, and I want to feel the difference which I'm making to enrich my driving experience, especially at the track (heel & toe downshifting has been a wonderful feeling of art, once I learned it!)

Will I ever go for a car with an auto (DCT) transmission? YES... But only after I have a sports car with a true manual in my garage, first and foremost.

Manual, because I have two functional legs. Can't think of any other reason why you wouldn't.

MT....not very good at driving automatic. I got a forester as a loaner and about 6-7 times I got frustrated when I parked and couldn't get the key out. Forgot to put it in park (neutral-->e-brake--->turn off car ---> pull Keys...damnit)

For me, it's the difference between driving and being driven.
