There's no air bag behind it.

It's in the dash above the console panels.

This thought just occurred to me, but is the size of the opening in the BRZ the same as the FR-S? If not (if Subaru doesn't use a Toyota-wide radio) we may have the start of a solution to the gap/fitment issue with aftermarket radios. (I know, wishful thinking)
No, that's not it at all. The radio size is a standard double DIN unit. Same size in both.

They did it in two pieces due to mold flow. Injection molding that as one piece would be difficult due to the asymmetry and large opening in the middle.

Nothing to do with the airbags either, as someone else suggested. The airbag on the passenger side deploys out of the top of the dash.

Your explanation makes sense. I

was just guessing based on the fact that the radios are only a standard 2DIN height, but not width. Toyota radios are "extra wide" and cannot be replaced by an aftermarket radio without using a trim panel, so it was wishful thinking on my part that the Subaru version required a different (narrower) trim piece that was a standard 2DIN width.

This did make me think though that if you were going to wrap the trim pieces anyway, it wouldn't be too difficult to fill the gap in and make it look like it was the correct size for an aftermarket radio.

I think that the glossy cf panel will reflect the sun light while driving, it can very be annoying

Oh, my mistake then. I didn't realize Toyota did something that wasn't double DIN but close to it. Sitting in both, at first glance, I assumed they were both double DIN, but you know what happens when you assume.

Yeah, you could fill the gap if need be. If I were wrapping them in something other than carbon fiber though (some sort of fabric), I would probably still keep them separate. I'm guessing the back side wasn't designed for it to pop off as one piece, and it might make future disassembly more difficult.

When the panels are bonded, they still come off and go back on the dashboard easily. No reason to leave them as 2 pieces.

Good to know. I haven't taken them off yet personally. Keeping them two pieces would make it easier to wrap though if you're wrapping it with a skin.
