It may not be as pretty of a solution as a legit key, but it's going to take the guts of my current key. Getting cut shouldn't be an issue and since it'll have my old key guts then compatibility won't be an issue. It's a shame though because there really were a couple of nice looking ones!
let us know if that works! i always wanted a flip key...dunno why lol

got my flipkey today and swapped my electronics. home depot cut it for free! :P

the material and the build feels pretty sturdy to me. it's held together with screws. the little silver is a bit cheap as one half came off but i just superglued it back on. fitting my electronics into it was simply enough, however the lock and trunk button are just a tiny bit more recessed than the alarm or unlock button. not a huge deal as it still functions just fine. i'm fairly happy with it. something to make my car just a bit more unique.

nope it's separate. it's not exactly obvious either. you'll actually have to cut into the key:

i wonder if i can hack up valet key and pull one out instead of ruining an actual key. i know the valet key will never get used.

I haven't done it with the BRZ key, but with most others... the transponder is a tiny chip. On one key, it was molded into the plastic, so I had to break it out and put it in a new shell.

On a Porsche key, it's held in with a spring.

But in most cases, the circuit board is separate...

i mean i guess you could... but you can also easily just buy a new regular key and put your components in there if you get tired of the flip key. i personally keep the valet key as my spare/original key and leave it safe somewhere with the original little silver tag thing. but that's just me!

i received my flip key today! was able to pull the transponder out of the valet key, but i pretty much had to destroy it to do so. the flip key is very cheap and the plastic around the upper screw hold was chewed up a bit. that screw was also slightly stripped. was able to get everything back together for a test fit, but cannot take that screw back out. was gonna write a quick how to guide, but i ordered a different flip key off ebay instead. gonna wait till that shows up.

this is the new shell : http://www.ebay.com/itm/Remote-Flip-...ef4bb2&vxp=mtr

and it has the added bonus of an autobot logo!

Just wanted to chime in here:

I lost one of my key fobs and I've tried 2 different key fobs without any luck. First one was from a Lexus KeyFob with the same FCC and IC number as the BRZ keyfob. I brought it to the dealership and they could only partially program it, they said something about the last 2 digits not being accepted while being reprogrammed.

Then after which I bought a used BRZ Keyfob and brought it back to the same dealership, this time around they said they could not get the key to be recognized by the system. Voltage on the battery works and the light on the Keyfob works, but the system did not want to recognize it.

I then had to do due diligence and brought it to another dealership to try to get it reprogramed there. But to no avail they could not program it.

Overall I spent the following:
1. $65 on the Lexus Key
2. $50 on the BRZ fob
3. $16 dollars for trying to program the Lexus Key, which I think is fair since the programming is $25, since they spent a good hour on something that wasnt a Subaru Part.
4. $0 dollars for trying to program the BRZ key fob twice.

Now I just caved in and ordered from http://www.fobkeyless.com/ for a brand new key at around $145. Not really highway robbery by the price the dealerships were trying to sell me a brand new key at $300 dollars.

So I'll be getting the key next week, and here's hoping that 3rd key is the charm.

Also, is it remotely possible that Ecutek flash could be preventing the keys from being programmed? PRobably not the case as I dont think those 2 systems are related

mechaghost, please update once you've received the key and program. I am in the same situation and don't want to waste money on keys that won't work.
