Typically an overrun will force cams to turn on, but if A/B with stock vs aftermarket is showing a significant difference...

maybe it s a racerom bug?

should maybe try force flashing an equivalent euro tune

i found many bugs in both pre and post restyling US calid, sloppy idle, PI forcing to 100% at idle even when wsrm, bad port injection compensation against positive boost,...

I don’t believe it’s a bug as the stock tune with the racerom patch enabled vvt rather quickly. I’m going to follow toms advice after I get a new tune with correct idle from delicious. If that doesn’t work I might have to return to stock and contact the repeat ship who rebuilt it.

dont underestimate the power of bugs when the racerom patch get into the rom
things can get really weird I experienced that many time while putting hands in US tunes
it s just a thought anyway, i ve never seen vvt not enabling in those bugged tunes anyway

Big news. I got it to go using toms advice along with extra steps. I guess the only question now is if it will turn on reliably.

Thanks guys!!

the pattern is so that, now that you had vvt enabled 1 time after the reflash, the next crannk/starting up will also be problematic.. and can be slower than first time
But
at Least the second time doesn t require speed = 0km/h, you can drive non stop until it enables again

From the 3rd starting of engine, after 2 successfull vvt enabled, will always turn on immediately after crank

So remember, flash always with cold coolant for better success, and:
vvt will enable first time only at 0km/h, and oil must be at least 32-35 Celsius, and idle under 1000
vvt will enable second time slower than first time, but also while driving at any speed)
vvt will enable always immediately from the third time

and use a lot of engine brake and high speed with cruise control and then try to trigger it engine braking from high speed and keep the braking until car is almost shutting down

that s my pattern every single time after a reflash
it took we many weeks to figure this whole out,
This problem is affecting mostly people with rebuilt engine, somehow the ecu doesn t like to see change.. so this is a very time consuming and annoying problem but I don t have a better solution to it
Sometimes it seems impossible to activate it, specially the second starting, and I just give up, reset DTC and try again the day after when cold again
Resetting dtc will bring you back like if you have just flashed it

what i don t understand is, why so many rebuilt engine show this
For what I know, as you said the ecu zeroes the exhaust to then have a reference, then when you stop the engine, the cam will quickly park to a set position

but why all those differences also in initial values between our cars? do you think it s possible that when the cams and cam gears get re installed, they can end to a slighty different position than the original one from Subaru (talking of very small difference)? and then the ecu moves it into right position?

a Problem that my car shows after the rebuild is, sometimes vvt is quick to activate after a reflash (but i still have to do my procedure I wrote earlier) sometimes it takes ages
and when it takes a lot, one phaser (intake #1) will start to swing, very regular forming a sine wave but very wildly.. like from -20 (that would even be forbidden by ecu limit) to +20
car is jerky and after some kms it reduce the amplitude of the swing untill cam intake #1 is identical to #2

I'm in peace because i learnt how to deal in each situation but it s driving me crazy

what you mean with "angle", the "cam intake advance" value or one of the others hidden vvt values?

it was something like
intake#1 +2
intake#2 -2

exh#2 -1

yep, i tried again and mine too
intake -2/-1
exh +2/0

today i decided to try to go to 160km/h with vvt off, in 6th gear i let it then overrun and during the overrun it just turned on as soon as i touched accel pedal
so very long overrun during high speed help s a lot yo activate soon

mine did for 2 years and old and 750 reflashesz
punctually at 32 Celsius of oil, vvt went to 1 no matter what in few seconds
that makes sense though

i ll watch again because i wasn t rrally paying attention as i was driving in a hurry, but no cam bounces, they are steady
Cam intake bounces for a while after vvt enables, it swings around zero badly but quickly fixes itself
