Found magnetic bearings on exhaust manifold?
So a rattle sounding sort of like an exhaust rattle started under the car a few weeks ago and I just now got the time to jack it up and investigate. The rattle is specifically at 4000 rpm and on throttle no where else.
I found what looks like some magnetic ball bearings and a 10mm (lol) socket stuck to the manifold after I dropped the skid plate. And ideas what these "bearings" could be from? The car is a 15 BRZ with about 17k on the clock. Only mods are a perrin intake tube to delete the sound tube, oft stage 1 tune, and some fluids. I am the second owner and bought it with less that 5k on it. I am guessing it is something left over from the first owner. I know they had done some cosmetic mods to the car before returning it to stock when I bought it. I just drove it after removing and the rattle is like 70% gone, but there is still a little something there, so I am going to have to drop the manifold and do some more investigating I guess. http://imgur.com/a/FmjvWF5 |

Sounds like you might have a blown manifold rotator cuff. Have you noticed any exhaust leaks?

Those "bearings" look just like small spherical magnets, they aren't part of the car and were probably being used to try to retrieve the socket you found.

It is strange though that it took 3 years, over 10k miles, several autocross and a track day to dislodge that socket. I will drop the manifold next and see if I can find any more balls. |

Bubba says that the previous owner most likely dropped the socket down there and it was rolling around making a sound that was bugging him, so he dropped the magnetic bearings down there to hold the socket in place so it doesn't roll around.

I'd just put it all back up in there and let them gestate properly. You clearly just found the nest of a female 10mm socket and her eggs.
Everybody know they always disappear and wonder where the go to but never think where they come from in the first place. |

I'm going to cover my undertray with magnets and go hunting for 10mm sockets.
