New engine is in - some issues
As to be expected I guess there's some new issues with my new (stock replacement) engine being tossed in (old one threw a rod);
It dies in idle quite often and is rackety as all hell. Once it gets going it's fine. Some smoke from the passenger side near the fuse box on occasion. Here's preliminary codes from Autozone, which says to replace ignition coils but I don't know about that. It repeats after the first 7 - I mean I guess it's kind of self explanatory, but I'm looking for any notes/advice because this is all new to me (first engine swap.. or ever touching an engine):

first time touching an engine ever...? you mean to say you've yet to make love with your engine??
who replaced the engine and why aren't you going back to them? even if we could diagnose it over the webz, not sure what an engine virgin would even do with such info.. |

I replaced the engine with a friend who has some experience. An engine virgin would probably take the info and use it in a helpful manner, assuming it was helpful. The biggest problem I think is that 1/2 the shit on the "new" (~15k) mile engine was bad.

Is this a brand new engine? Completely? or just a short block and you swapped your existing hardware onto it?
Have you double checked to be sure the direct injection ECU is completely secured? The frame acts as a ground for the direct injection ECU. I'm not trying to be discouraging, but if you're unable to troubleshoot a misfire, was it wise to try assembling and putting in an entire engine with no prior experience? I definitely would advise taking it to a reputable shop ( not auto zone) to have it seriously diagnosed and resolved by technicians. Best of luck regardless, hopefully it is something you can resolve on your own and learn from! |

Longblock, was supposed to be all stock with 15-20k miles - it had lots of broken parts and weird little mods unfortunately and we ended up swapping a lot. I don't have money to get it professionally done yet - and no it probably wasn't wise, but hey sometimes you gotta give things a try. Today's the first day of troubleshooting so I'm not discouraged yet. And I have learned a lot. My old engine had 50k miles and threw a rod so I really wasn't expecting this massive financial burden as the car is only 5 years old with hardly any miles
Autozone was only to get the codes - wasn't planning on them fixing anything, lol.I mean I guess my plan is to go down the list and swap off parts and diagnose what I can. When it's beyond my paygrade I'll bring it in if I have to. But for now I'm determined to try and fix it myself. |

The over-advance code might indicate a timing chain out of alignment (IE - jumped some teeth). Or a bad cam sensor.

It also shows the ABS light and the VSC and traction control buttons don't do anything.

Let's hope as a team we can come out on top and save you some $ then. If not, I'd save up for a beater until you can make it right here. |

When you get a serious CEL the ECU puts the car into what is called "limp mode". The lights on and things not working is part of that mode. Bet you have no cruise either. You will need to resolve and clear the code to get full function back.

So I puled the negative terminal to try and reset the light and it dropped 3 errors at the time of testing, so down to 4: cyl 4 misfire, random misfire, ignition coil, bank 1 air fuel ratio imbalance.
Lol it's from the same exact make/model but the guy says its a JDM engine which I couldn't exactly find any info on - but yeah I'm THAT guy Supposed to be stock. The "limp mode" is interesting, I'll try the cruise control. Next step I suppose is like DarkPira7e said and I'll just pull sensors/coils, which I have a good feeling about. I really do appreciate the help! The damn car was a month out of warranty when it blew, but it was a bit of a lemon since I got it.
