I have never made a counter-offer to a single one of my employees. If they are already in a mind to leave, it's likely more than just money and it just delays the inevitable. I shake their hands, wish them well, offer to buy them lunch and a beer on their last day and open a replacement req.

The job I have now as a contractor was really nice at first because of all the bonus/severance money they paid me to stay, and since the services company I work for is massive I saw it as a good opportunity for advancing my career. After this first transition though... I'm not so sure how good the advancement can be. It looks like a lot of transfers they like are linear with no pay difference. I'd like to climb the ladder (and of course make more money) so I might have to start looking external again, unfortunately.

But they are sometimes required in order to move up down the road. It has been my experience that some younger people expect to be promoted in months or a year in a position. It can take years and even decades to move up in some fields. All those Baby Boomers that people like to say had great jobs "handed to them" often took 20 or more years to get there so expecting promotion in a couple of years is just not how things work.

It's all a matter of what you are qualified for versus what is available. If you're going sit around 10 years waiting to move up you probably aren't looking hard enough (at other places). Forget promises figure out what the quickest path to success is.

If you are really good, depending on the field, you can switch jobs often and move up quickly, or stay in the same company and do the same. That's a rarity. In teaching, if you're really smart, it takes about five years just to get a reasonable grasp of what you're doing. My brother, a corporate lawyer, is more or less stuck where he is, at the mid-high end of the management range. Maybe he can do more and maybe not, but nobody is going to move him up.

The chili dogs in our vending machines are to die for. Possibly literally.

There is no such thing as a bad chili dog, only bad results from eating it. I can live with that....well at least in the short term....long term has probably been heavily impacted by chili dogs.

Joe usually works the short orders. He makes the best chili dogs. Cuts them down the middle and grills them before adding the homemade chili. He's really generous with the fresh-cut fries too. Mmmmm.....
