Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

The FA20 is the first and only engine to use both direct and port injection by Subaru?

The FA20 is only used in the 86?

If that’s correct, after all the development costs, I can not see them changing the engine unless it’s slated to be used elsewhere.

ETA FA20F is already modified so that null and void lol

Why would the 2.4 be any heavier? The exterior dimensions of the engine are the same. It is a 9.5% increase in bore diameter. That's it.

The DI seals are shared with the Crosstrek, Impreza, and outback, which leads me to believe the heads are very similar and the only parts needed to add the PI is the intake manifold, the PI injectors themselves, and the injector ECU. Sounds easy to add to the Ascent block, and swapping the cams to rev higher.

So it’s coming to a Fwd Toyota platform that’s designed for cars smaller than a corolla with a Subaru motor? Yea nah.

If we see the 2.4 it’ll be on a tweaked version of the old platform I think. Less retooling to do at the plant too.

This is hilarious! "A recent rumor out of Japan's Bestcar Magazine supported by Torque News". One makes it up and another "agrees" so it must be true. The sad part is they keep getting clicks and making money on this shit so they will keep writing more.

The dealer meeting absolutely took place as posted by Guff. There is even a video on his IG showing a blue Zupra and green (current) 86 taking center stage that was leaked. However, there isn't any photo or video of this "new 86". I personally don't know the guy at all. Take everything with a gain of salt.

Agree, I think they will pull another "Tacoma", aka, looks more like a facelift with a different drivetrain.

This^ Even the drivetrain may not be all that different though even if they do go with the FA24. That engine as is fits more into the "truck" category with loads of low end torque but very little gains up top. It is designed for low compression and low rev applications. A great power plant for an SUV or larger sedan but would be lackluster in a sports car for any purpose other than burnouts. Sure it is higher horsepower and torque but look beyond those numbers and see when they come into play.

Now, to make this engine more playful and keep it NA (which is what they have vowed to do from the start of these cars) they are going to have to bring up the compression to make revs. This will drop the low end torque but give more improved high end availability. This will also significantly increase emissions.

I know everybody wants to ignore this fact but the reality is that Subaru can not. They would not be designing the engine with consideration for todays standards but will be looking at those for the next few years. Those standards are getting more and more restrictive ever year and this will make them harder to meet even with today's tech. The reductions that they need to meet by 2025 are seemingly impossible even now so don't expect them to make a car that will be fine in 2022 and only run that engine in 3 model years.

All in all it adds up to some minor variations in drivetrain but no significant changes. Unless of course they go hybrid and then it will be a completely new drivetrain.

What? They just need to flip the platform and stretch it out.
boom, next gen 86 ready platform!

That's how this works right?

That is all they need to do yes. I hear that when they transfer it to the Toyota platform they are going to make a new version of the 2JZ (GTW version). They are also going to move production from Japan to the Toyota Woodstock Canada assembly plant that currently builds the Rav4. This will be cool since I can then go across the street and watch them assemble them. I know this is all fact because the Toyota janitor's, sister's, uncle's, wife's, brother's, dog groomer told me it was happening.
