Once you crank that thing over whatever may have been there will be ingested and destroyed....just so ya know.

Check all your wire harness connections. You may have half locked one. Just disconnect and reconnect all of em. Happens a lot more than you think.

Figured as much. And I think that is likely what happened. Are there any connections under the manifold I should look at? Or are they all exposed?

Does it stay running if you give it a little bit of throttle?

No. Throttle input does nothing.

Does that suggest it is not a vacuum leak?

That suggests a rather bad leak, if that's indeed what's going on. It would mean the engine might be completely bypassing the manifold/TB/MAF (though this is my first car with a MAF so I'm speculating.) Missing gaskets are bad news if you're trying to run the car that way.

If it's any consolation, I once had the tube between the TB and manifold on a previous car sucked off the TB. It happened in the middle of stop-n-go Chicago rush hour traffic in a construction zone (was a 4" drop to pavement they'd carved off, no shoulder)... I was running a prototype CAI, and we learned something about just how much vacuum the car generates... also, that it's a bad (factory!) design to put a rubber tube between the TB and IM. In hindsight, it was a bad design on that first round of the CAI but ...

There's a BRZ FSM CD available for download in the BRZ forum if nothing else, should be the same for your troubles. This is something you're up to solving, it will just take patience, which is really hard to come by when your car has decided to stop working right after you tried to give it a little extra care...

FWIW, the smoke suggestion would be motor off. It does not take a lot of pressure to get smoke to show up where it shouldn't. Sometimes no pressure at all.

It is not a vacuum leak, if it was it would have to very large and therefore obvious. It's going to be a sensor or wire that is damaged or not connected. Check the throttle connection and wires, then MAF/MAP sensors and associated wires. Also check the pins in the connectors, sometimes they get damaged when disconnecting/connecting them.

with ignition in "on" position check that when you depress throttle buttlerfly in throttle body moves. you will need an assistant.

The last guy with similar problem had a mouse chew throgh his airfilter and bits of filter got stuck in MAF sensor in intake tube causing car to stall after start.

Agree with bolded part. Been reading up on BPBs since they were released, but still hesitant to buy them as their instructions don't give me any confidence in doing the installation myself.

Ya. I will likely make a new thread this weekend outlining some tips for the install as I just got done with it. There is a lot that can go wrong with this one...
