Sound tube doesn't produce any noise. Only noise is from whatever stuff the tires are picking up from the road bouncing off the fender liners. Also exhaust, especially if aftermarket. Otherwise the car is fairly quiet.

What do you mean the sound tube doesn't produce any noise? Making noise is the only reason it even exists. Shit, it is even named after it's purpose.

You are correct the sound tube does not produce noise, it funnels the noise created by the engine into the cabin. This results in 3db higher cabin noise. Conversely, removing the sound tube quiets the cabin by 3db. Removing the stupid tube was one of my first mods.

When I got my car and for the first year or so I had an issue with the noise in this car. It was just too quiet, got a modest perrin 2.5 resonated catback. Now she sounds lovely, I drop the windows every chance I get so I can hear that exhaust note.
I think there is also something to be said about the safety of a louder exhaust since cars can hear you and be more aware of where your at on the road. But obviously there is a tasteful sound level and a fast and the furious fart can sound level that is annoying. My car is asphalt color and even with lights on big ass SUVs and trucks don't see me, but they hear my when I drop a gear and pass them. |

Here's a good article on the subject...although I'm sure you could find ones that argue the counterpoint, at least on "MyMufflerIsLoadToProtectMe.Zealot.

I agree that this is kind of "an urban legend" but I don't agree on this:
"So you may hear a motorcycle approaching, but you won’t really hear much noise until it is next to you or past you." Doppler effect just changes the frequency, not the amplitude. If the listener don't have a problem on hearing higher frequencies, there would be no difference. |

Well I have noticed on the freeway on more than one occasion where a large SUV is riding next to me and they can't see me but they hear that a car is there and then look before changing. Before I got a catback more than once a large truck or SUV starts changing lanes into me. Granted my car color is asphalt color so it isn't the most visible. I think a bright color is better than any level of sound but still being able to be herd I think helps let larger vehicles at least know I am there and to look. However if the sound is too loud like on many motorcycles I think it doesn't help at all because you can't tell where it is even coming from and if anything it can be distracting to near by drivers. |

I have a loud(ish) bright orange car and get cut off or almost sideswiped with the best of them. Noise doesn't help anybody that isn't paying attention any better that colour does. Besides most of those big SUVs are almost soundproof inside anyway.

My whole point of posting in this thread is that the stock twin is surprisingly quiet to me for a cheap Japanese sports car, other than you know the crickets, random ticking sounds, road noise, wind noise, tire screeching sounds, general rattling, she is quiet as a kitten. |

This is really all that matters!
The stock exhaust is no doubt meant to appease governments and the average Joe/Jane of the car buying public but it has no business being used on these cars.

My boss drives a new model F250 Diesel that has an aftermarket tune for hauling (he is a competition sports fisherman and pulls a boat nearly every weekend). You can barely hear his engine running in his cabin, but I can hear him turn into our building (100 yards away) in my office which is on the opposite side from the drive.

I mean, it sounds cool when you drive by a wall with the stock exhaust...
