Hey Tcoat,

My 13 FRS has almost 50k hard driven miles on it currently without any major issues. I am worried the car will not be the same reliable beauty it is when I get it back. If someone decides not to have the valve-spring replaced and it fails, are you just screwed at that point? I just got my recall notice in the mail last month and I have not gone through the threads yet to know if people have had any issues after the work is done.

If you read the recall there is language there that indicates Toyota would reimburse persons that had an engine failure due to the springs and had the engine repaired as a result. That would point to them repairing a damaged engine if it failed without the fix. Of course, the burden will be on you to prove the valves failed, which shouldn't be too difficult.

Of course, there is no guarantee on that.

Did they call you to set an appointment and you told them you're refusing to have the work done? Or did you get a piece of junk mail you threw out and didn't even bother reading?

If you go to the dealer for other work and refuse to have the recall performed it will be documented.

On the other side, I'm over 6,000 miles past when I had the recall done, and no issues so far. That said, had I not been an "early adopter" I'd be very tempted to not do it, particularly given my car had over 136,000 miles on it at the time I had it done. It is very unlikely I was going to suffer the spring failure.

I got the recall notification in the mail but I do not consider it junk mail. No one called.

If I had that many miles on the car I would actually be happy for them to do the work. I would see it more as a refresh of the engine.

If your valve spring fails in 2 years and the dealer refuses the repair, stating that you were informed and refused the recall... You see where I'm going?

It was junk mail, didn't even read it. No one called, I have no idea what a valve springer retainer replacement even is. Please fix my engine, I'll pick it up when it's done.

I've performed recalls on 40 year old cars. When the car comes in to the dealer, the recall is to be performed, whenever that may be.

for this particular topic I would definitely lean towards the "if it aint broke, don't fix it" side considering all the horror stories that keep surfacing.

None of the parts the gets replaced under the recall would "freshen up the engine" if they were taken off to begin with. So best case scenario is you replace springs that probably wouldn't have failed anyway, worst case scenario you end up with a spun bearing due to blockage that they deny to repair.
