Not mentioned here, but it might be head gasket related as well. Have you checked your oil? I doubt the car will run at all if you have 1 littre of coolant in your oil, but it may be leaking into the cylinders. When my head gasket started to go, it was the other way around, it was pushing air into the coolant so I dont think thats your issue, but I also dont think you should exclude the posibility.

Easily.


Dalton's law comes into play here. If there's lingering actual air, the cap does nothing to raise boiling temp because the water vapor only contributes to a small part of the combined pressure in the system. Then it takes several more boil-vapor-cooldown-contract cycles to displace the air that may actually be stuck in that high point where the burp valve is placed.

I have 130k and my coolant tank has gone dry probably a dozen times.
