Might want to consider a Newfie (Newfoundland). They are sweet, easy going dogs like Goldens, and easy to train. They get along with pretty much everyone and everything.

They also don't eat much despite their size. A couple of cups of kibble a day and they are quite satisfied.

Now, they'll eat anything you give them of course, but it goes to their hips. Sorta like me now that I think about it.

Only thing you have to do is be careful with them around water. They are water rescue dogs by nature and without any training will try to "save" you.

EDIT: They are also basically area rugs about 90% of the time as adults. They were bred for small fishing boats so they just sort of lay around until its time for action, then you get about 10 minutes and they are done. They do love long leisurely walks in the country though...

Right, forgot about that. As long as they'll be "inside dogs" they are fine, but Newfies are definitely built for cold weather. You'd have to monitor them pretty closely when out in the heat and probably keep them closely groomed.

Yea, you definitely need to NOT care about dog hair. We have all hardwood floors and sometimes when the HVAC kicks on you'll see a tumbleweed come across the floor.

You need to brush them out every week or so and then it's minimal, or you can wait and end up with this....

Sound like a great dog to be a fishing partner for a guy retiring to Idaho that owns a fishing boat, other than all the hair.

Edit: a wookiee would be best, but have to get used to the smell. But then again they are usually tinkering when they should be fishing.

As a kid, we had a half German Shepard half husky that was just full of tan colored long hair. She died in about 1986. Before that, we had a Shetland sheep dog, and I swear there is still hair in my Mom's back yard from both.

Yep perfect dog for that...if you can't have a wookie.

The hair means they dry very quickly by the way, and they have webbed feet..

When I'm ready for a dog in a couple years I will seriously look into one. I need a cold weather dog on the boat.

Edit: a dog that is also a princess, because that will be her name.

I've had two, and they were both princesses, just not in name.

I had a dog named Dutchess once. I watched her get hit by a car when I was 8. I was traumatized. \dark story

Goldens often smell terrible. No amount of washing can get rid of the funk if they get it. I think it's genetic. A choco lab beats a golden any day. Our lhasa wad once attacked by a golden, unprovoked.

We will probably get a poodle. Hypoallergenic and clean. Good tempered and loving.
