Considering most cars leave the dealer lots with completely dry brakes, it wouldn't be a surprise to see them starting to jam within a year after they're put in service.
Not sure what kind of weird, caustic chemicals they use up in Quebec, but no new car should have brakes seizing up after just one winter, no matter how salty it gets...

That's the sad reality though.

I’m with you. 15 years in the automotive industry I’ve seen maybe 10 seized calipers. Never seen pads seized “in the rack”, not once. Plenty of real winters between Virginia, Montana and Oregon.

Having to hammer pads out of a rack is a regular occurrence, having rotors rusted to the hubs so hard you've got to shatter them with a sledgehammer isn't even rare. Most things require the oxy acetylene torch to be removed. That is my life.

I've had a seized caliper before. It was because the car was 15 years old. I stand by the fact that a properly manufactured and maintained new vehicle shouldn't have parts failing as a result of salty winters in 1-2 years. OEMs test for this. Calipers have grease and rubber boots on the slider pins.

If a boot gets the smallest nick, it's goodbye. I've personally seen it happen on a new-ish car. Rare for a new one but not out of the question. Doesn't take long for the corrosion to set in.

edit: Pucks in the caliper, though? I've seen them jam and wear crooked. Once they start going south, the caliper jams too.

They don't jam on the slide pins, rust builds up between the racks and abutment shims, seizing the pad in place.

I've never had that happen either, but I have always properly greased my pads when I install them. I assume the factory does the same. My BRZ has gone through many winters without issues.

Factory brake pads are installed bone dry. At least mine were. I'm still on the originals after 50 K.

That's nice balance for wear. Impressive.

I'm almost at 100k and haven't changed anything. Looking forward to it though, since it seems my rotors are a bit warped (very noticeable when a bit of water splashes around).
