They might decide to do batches of reworked heads, and then the old heads become the new batch after rework. |

It seems like giving the first 100 people brand new engines and then start a circulation of refurbished engines would be cost effective. The dealers could swap in a new engine in 3 hours and then there could be a small staff of Subaru corporate workers who do the rebuilds at a central location and get really good at it. Seems like this would cut down on bad rebuilds done by dealers and people coming back with other problems. But I don't think this would work because people would potentially go from a 20K engine to a refurbished 150K engine. Regardless this is going to cost a ton of money. |

Mom and pop shop methods. Not going to do that for 400,000 engines.

Depending on what report you read it will be someplace between $400,000,000 and $500,000,000. With 400,000 cars affected I don't see how they can do it for less than that.
As a forum we are looking at actions to correct the handful of FRS/BRZs involved and not seeing the big picture. They are not going to give new engines to anybody nor start rebuilding and swapping heads. There are just too many variables and logistics involved to make that feasible. "Subaru is taking a substantial hit from this development, having cut operating profit expectations for the April-September period (the first half of Japan’s financial year) last week by $434 million (49 billion yen). The company now estimates an operating profit of $540 million (61 billion yen) for this period, which is largely a result of the recall and its subsequent costs."

Yesterday I had the oil changed at the dealer. Confirmed that my '13 is part of the recall. But, the dealer doesn't have the recall fix instructions yet to schedule the repair. They thought I should be receiving notification from Subaru soon.
