Does a spring replacement require the engine to go through a new break in period?

It seems like my car is affected by this stupid recall. My car has headers and a tune, any idea if the recall will require a new tune or if they will hassle me due to the mods?

No tune should be needed. Whether they hassle you about mods is going to be very dealer specific. I doubt they will have much concern over headers but you never know. The car is out of warranty by now anyway so it isn't like they can deny warranty work based on the tune at some later date.

I would just make sure they know you have a tune when you bring it in. It's possible (though not necessarily probable) for them to try and flash it to something newer, which you don't want.

Very good point. Since there is no issue with being refused future warranty work due to mods the best option is probably to be very upfront with the dealer.

So looks like the notices will come out late December. Has anyone ever had one fail though? I can't find threads about a dropped valve, nor do I remember any.

Was talking to a guy conbected with subaru in Australia. Aparantly because its safety recall they cannot refuse to do work on modified cars. However they could charge if the mods increase labour time or parts, or require you to possibly remove big mods like turbo before work is done. On any modded car they will aparantly require you to sign some form of waiver that any work they do on or arround mods is not covered. Aparantly they will not remove heads, just valve covers and spark plugs and then turn engine to TDC on each cylinder then pressurize cylinder with compressed air via spark plug hole to keep valves in place when replaceing springs. |

Did he say if they'll be pulling the engine out of the car or are they going to struggle through it while it's in the car?

valve spring issue?
Only problem is you can’t access the springs by simply removing the valve covers. The covers will expose the bolts for the cam subassemblies but they can’t be removed without removing the timing cover and chains. The subassemblies are also sealed to the heads with FIPG which needs to be cleaned off and reapplied. Avoiding the removal of the heads is like saving 1 hour on a 14 hour job. One of the documents said they expect to take 12 hours for the job. I’d be amazed if they can do it that fast.
You have to do steps 1 to 43 in this document to access the springs: https://demos.starbase7.net/t3Portal...056U900CX.html It would be cool if you could remove the valve cover and then go directly to removing the cam caps but the manual specifically says NOT to remove the caps first or risk warping the heads. Instead you remove the cam subassembly as one unit and then remove the caps. For this job you don’t need to remove the cam from the subassembly so you stop at step 43. With the subassembly off you can then remove the rockers to access the springs. Even if you could go directly to the caps without warping the head you still have to remove the timing cover and chains which in itself is a pain in the ass (thanks to the FIPG).
