That being said, OP, you should really do the math to see if you can actually afford it, and take a look at what you have to give up to do so. Your parents may have a point, and while you don't have to listen to them, you should definitely consider their reasoning. Rather than dismiss their advice, my suggestion is to ask for paths that lead to you getting the car you want and see what they say. Maybe you pick up a side job for a year, or reduce spending on something else? Or simply wait a year? They know you better than anyone on the internet does.
I bought a used 10 yo 911 a year out of college. I financed most of it, traded in my 914, and in the mid 80's had a used car loan at about 13% with a payment more than my rent. Stupidest financial thing you can do. Still have the car. So glad I did it. Guess I haven't learned. Some time you just have to go for it.

Do you have $30k in cash to buy your new GT86?
If not, you can't afford it.
It may look like you can, but you can't.

People who take loans to buy depreciating assets are typically young & clueless (redundant)

Or don't care about money as much as some.

If you can't pay it off in 3 years, you can't afford it. That's all the warranty you get. Also, the loan shouldn't be bigger than what you'd get if you drive it from the lot to trade it in.

I don't remember what my parents said. Probably "looks like a fun car."

Not even sure what that message was. Would people really have that type of reaction? It's not like they went and bought a Ferrari.

Best Dad reaction ever...

I think the point of the commercial was that it not a Ferrari but the wives don't realize it and think it costs the same. My wife's reaction when I took my Lancer in for a simple oil change and then called her to come down to the Toyota dealership because I had just accidently bought a car was similar at first. She walked into the showroom, saw it sitting there and immediately said "How @&%#*& much is that going to cost us? You already have a new car." When I told her the cost she changed her tune (and then proceeded to get even more off the price). The commercial is just an melodramatic version of what actually happened in my case. I see it as being played more for comedic effect about the perceived vs actual value.

What bothers me more about the commercial is the dudes hooning around in the gravel pit destroying the car while an apparent (and at one point naked) meth head chases them on foot. What the hell do the two different aspects of the commercial have in common? What is the message they are trying to send?

We are presented with a montage of adult couples in which the wives/females all express hysterical disapproval. Those stories are contrasted with one in which the boys are expressing abject joy in their freedom to play with a fun new toy.

The message is that all women suck the life out of men and buying a Twin is an act of rebellion. Even the music was sad and foreboding. "Better get this car while you can." "Don't let her tell you what to do."

They could have mixed it up with some role reversal but that would have diluted the message. I thought it was quite edgy.

I could watch it a hundred times. The production is gorgeous. My sadness is the intended result. We'll never see anything close to it in the U.S. because we're a bunch of politically-correct pu55ies.

The message is the truth for far too many married men. We can't see that stuff in the US because women control the purchasing power of a majority of households, and that would destroy Toyota's reputation. Even in Japan it is a gigantic gamble, as women control almost all the money in most traditional Japanese marriages.

Bah! We all make our own beds. Life is filled with messy negotiation and compromise.
