I wouldn't be so sure on "lot of people run staggered". They might be simply more vocal, and generate impression that there are lot of them, while in reality imho more then 49/50 will run square tire/wheel choice and see no need to bring it up/mention/talk about it.

All i commented, that "lot of people" might be a bit misleading, so would appreciate to not put words in my mouth i haven't wrote. While i indeed do believe that paying own money to make something worse is wrong and advise against doing, if asked for advises, from where comes what i supposedly am "really telling you" stuff?
I know, that it's always possible to search for specific niches of owners to get "statistics" of whichever outcome you wish, especially if ignoring existence of something opposing one's views. Searching for posts/threads, visiting specific car shows, having friends with specific beliefs. Confirmation bias. |

From the other thread that we talked about this stuff, I asked if you'd ever driven a staggered setup and you said no. I'm not looking for confirmation bias (in fact in the other thread I stated that I'd most likely be going with a square setup), I just wanted to hear from someone running staggered. In my experience, with the RX-8 being similar in that it is a low power, driver's car with square setup from the factory, there are far fewer staggered 8's on the rx8club forum. Also, when you run a square setup on the 8, the wheels fit similarly in the wheel wells. You don't either get 1" of poke in the front (if the rears are fitting nicely) or sunk rears (if the fronts fit nice). Lastly, TRD wheels are staggered, so the Toyota engineers know best argument doesn't necessarily hold water for me. And yes, I am concerned with looks, but I'm a designer (graphic/UI who almost went automotive design while in school) and esthetics are important to me. If you're correct, if Leonardo says, "oh my god, my setup is shit and I'm going back to square as soon as these tires are done" then I'll go square for sure. I'm looking for evidence. |

Hi Guys, looking to buy a set of SSR GTV02's
18x8.5 +44 all round Can someone please confirm these will clear stock suspension? fitment guide says it should. Will this also be okay running TRD 1" drop springs? Also what size tyres would you guys recommend? I'm trying to choose between 225/40/18, 235/40/18 or 245/35/18... Thanks Last edited by Juzzotec; 07-30-2018 at 09:35 AM. |

The reason I have staggered wheels is: I did not have enough money to buy the coils I wanted at the time I purchased the wheels. IMO going staggered is just for looks. The car can handle a staggered setup, and in most cases, is totally fine for DD. I do not feel that it ruins the way the car drives. I also do not think it is a performance Upgrade. They are a compromise. Looks for lower MPG, not being able to rotate tires, and cost. I have run a few different tire setups on my car. Square and staggered. I currently have a staggered setup. 18x8 +20 215/40/18 front and 18x9 +32 rear 245/35/18. the tires are Hankook evo v12 tires, which I do not like. They have plenty of grip; I do not understeer. But, I do not like the soft side wall; bouncy. I had 225/40 front and 245/35 rear MPSS, which I loved. The stagger was small enough it was not noticeable while driving. I had 245/35/18 all around on staggered wheels This did not work very well. The 245 on the 8" wheel made the steering mushy/heavy and did not feel good on corners. After trying a bunch of different size tire widths on different width wheels, I feel that: tire stretch is better than being too wide. 225 is a great width for the front. A bulging tire is ugly and does not function optimally. Tires that have the same side wall angle (either because they are the same size or because they are staggered on the appropriate corresponding size wheels for the same look) are visually pleasing to my eyes. And when they look different bother me. I am getting a 17" square setup for my next set of wheels.

18x8.5 +44 all round will fit with stock suspension and lowered on TRD springs. I recommend 225/40/18 tires. 235/40 is a bit tall, and provides no benefit IMO. 245/35 will cause some of the steering's preciseness to be lost.

Does anyone have opinions on the fitment of a 17x8 +32? Would the best tire size be a 225/45/17? I'm at stock height and plan to drop the car about 1" in the future.

17x8 +32 with a 225/45 will look flush and fit very nicely on stock suspension. The wheels will suck in a couple mm when you lower the car and still look great. I would not go any taller or wider of a tire on those wheels. 225/45 is perfect IMO for them. You WILL NOT rub. Good luck!

I went with your suggestion and I love the right amount of meatiness to wheel diameter ratio. I think it's perfect. https://imgur.com/gDWDras |
