Sounds like you've done more than I would have guessed. I like your plan to wait until the car is older and you aren't as concerned about it. If something were to go wrong after a bad rebuild you would most likely need a new short block which is about $2000. Or worst case a new engine which you can find used for 3000 or so.

Do your research and start buying tools. Maybe get a junker Subaru engine and tear that down first. Like others have said, be prepared for a project like this to take months. The first one I rebuilt took about two months working only a few hours after work a few days a week (because I did the work at my friends shop). When I just rebuilt my FA20 it took about 6 weeks but that was mostly just me not wanting to rush it and being lazy. If I worked full days 7 days a week it probably would have taken 2 weeks.

I'm still nervous I messed something up somewhere. I've got about 1000 miles on it so far but not entirely sure I'm in the clear yet.

It's nice to be able to do so much on your own. I hear people quote what they pay even for basic stuff and it's shocking. I've saved some serious money over the years. Someone said you would only save 500-1000 if you built your engine on your own. That sounds low to me but who knows.

I am the same way. All the stuff I've installed and I'm still paranoid about each part, haha. It's all been on a while, but I'm just paranoid about stuff like that anyway. The engine would be no different.

My turbo took a week or two, but mostly due to ups losing the turbo somehow, but I still got to work slowly on it which isn't bad thing. So far it works. Hopefully your engine is gtg!

It's just a motor but unless you're equipped, I wouldn't fuck with it. These are the days of throw away short blocks.

Hahaha. I have the same hangup on the use of the word motor rather than engine.
