Transmission / Clutch Binding?
I replaced my throwout bearing, clutch disk, pressure plate and pilot bearing at 75k with an Exedy OEM replacement (fun fact, the factory PP is also Exedy). Since then, I've been having a loud grinding / binding sound upon takeoff / load on low RPMs until 5th gear. I've noticed that replacing the gear oil with Motul alleviates or suppresses the sound for a few hundred miles but it returns. I'm assuming my synchros are toast?
I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue? Car is drivable as I'm currently at 108k. The sound is just annoying. |

Have you opened it back up to see if something isn't seated right, or if an old chunk of something got stuck in there?
I don't have any real insight tho, mostly interested in other people's feedback. I'm at 75k now, thinking about preemptive clutch replacement. Did yours fail, or did you replace preemptively? |

So this happens while the clutch is fully engaged? We're going to need audio to hear what you're hearing, since this sounds coincidental and not clutch related, to me at least. Did you change anything else? Tune? What do you mean by low RPM?

Did you change the tranny cover (the Toyota name for it) that the TOB slides on? If it was even slightly worn you would get a grind and bind at low RPMs.

I had my clutched changed with an OEM Exedy one as well and also have that sound. The garage that did it is reputable and I 100% trust them. I would describe it as a 'zipper' sound like as if you were zipping up a jacket. However, Ive been driving it normally and other than the noise it drives fine, no slip or binding. If your syncros are toast you would feel a lot of resistance shifting |

This! That’s what it sounds like but I wanted to describe it as something more familiar to the auto community. It’s perfectly driveable the sound is just annoying. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I did, about 15k after the replacement. There was no apparent wear on any of the clutch components. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

If the clutch is fully released, and you're not shifting, you can rule out most clutch related issues and anything with the syncros.

If the TOB was bad it would cause wear in the shaft. Pain to check but it may be your issue. That pic I attached was mine and although it doesn't show well it was beat to crap by the bad TOB.

Interesting. When I dropped the clutch to check the wear on all of the components after the swap everything was fine and properly lubricated. |
