Hill start assist can’t disable

I have a 2018 BRZ and I wanted to check out the hill assist feature. I turned it on, but now I don’t care for it. It’ll cause me to stall if I give it too little gas which I’m used to doing.

Anyway I did the same thing that turned it on, hold the left trac control button for around one minute until both lights go off, then let go and re press the button. Should disable the hill start but it doesn’t. What am I doing wrong?

Just unplug the battery and that'll take care of it

If I were him, I would much prefer to do it the proper way, rather than disconnecting the battery, which resets a lot of other things too...

To disable the hill start assist system, perform the above Step 1 through Step 6 again.

The steps in the book also specify that you have to engage the parking brake, turn the engine off, then crank it to restart, then do the thing with the button, then turn the engine off again and crank it one last time to see that the status had changed. Did you do all that starting and stopping of the engine, or just try to do the part with the buttons?

I did all that.

Why the hell cant Subaru just have a menu option to turn it on/of or another button like under the odometer reset?

BTW I’m sorry I even tried the feature.

I feel your pain bro

I am shopping to replace my daily driver and all these newish cars have retarded "safety" crap that you can't easily or even fully turn off. So sad. I guess I should be grateful that I still have the freedom to own and commute in my own vehicle. But I'm not happy with the state of government regulation of cars "in the name of safety". Giving up freedom out of fear leads to slavery IMO.

Sorry I got carried away lol

I'd pop into the dealer, tell them it won't turn off and get them to turn it off using the diagnostic system. If it's truly not responding to the procedure in the manual, they should do it for free under warranty.

It's the clock. And the ECU, which leads to a floppy gas pedal until the ECU re-learns it. And it resets the gear indicator. And it causes the head unit in my 2015 to re-initialize, and go through some basic settings again...

So actually quite a few things.

Hey guys, I figured it out, was not pressing the button in the correct time.

All good.

I feel like the assist was/could be worthwhile but in some instances such as when I am backing out of a spot or into my driveway after a stop, that I don't think it's there so if I give it light throttle the car will stall.

I think it's both good and bad at the same time, so I think I'll leave it off as that's what I've been accustom to driving since 1988.
