Need advice, dealership says I need new engine - Page 2 - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

I just had my 2013 engine rebuilt with 62k under Toyota extended warranty, total bill was $11,602, the service agent told me that a new crated FRS engine was $6500. I was lucky Toyota did the right thing by honoring my warranty.

Valid to out of warranty fix? What do you mean by that?

And like said, read your manual. You have a right to have the car serviced by anyone and you also do not have to use OEM parts/fluids.

I had oil changes from Jiffy lube and my local independent Honda shop beside me do oil changes at 7500 miles interval and Toyota honored my warranty. I believe you can do your own oil changes as long as you have all documents.

They said they wouldn't do a out of warranty courtesy because it was serviced by jiffy lube. I talked the dealership today and told them I was going to be towing the car to a nearby shop who quoteed me 6k for a used engine 23k miles and labor with a one year warranty. They told me that they could possibly come under that. Which is a big difference from the 17k they originally stated.

Bought an engine with 15k miles for $2600 shipped. Labor will run you anywhere from 1-2k so you're at around $4k

Run. Run far away and as soon as possible. That is beyond shady.

Seriously, get a second opinion.... you very likely could not even need an engine replacement, just a sensor. Did you take a look at the various fixes for that code by any chance?

That's a much better prospect already!

That said once your car is all better again, don't take it to Jiffy Lube or other 10-minute oil change places. The oil they use is shit, IF they even change it. They likely don't change your filter either. Do some googling, there are some horror stories out there. I'm not surprised the dealer refuses to own the warranty on a car serviced there.

Either take it to a good independent shop or do it yourself (it's really not hard and takes ~1/2 hour) if you don't feel like paying the dealership's price for an oil service. It's too important to leave up to chains that are known to take massive shortcuts at best.

I took my old 2000 Accord to Penzoil for oil changes from 40k to about 250k. Never had a problem with them. I did watch them do the work usually. They'd also always try to upsell all the other bullshit (air filters, trans flushes, coolant flushes etc) but that comes with the territory. Not all those places are bad.

I've since moved away and haven't found a decent similar place so i've been taking it to a independent shop and they charge damn near as much as the dealer for oil changes. And last time they installed a leaky bosch oil filter. might as well just go back to the dealer.

For my personal knowledge, on the oil picture of OP, what does represents the metal flakes? Is it in the center of the light spot where there's sort of a color gradiant (brown towards grayish) or it's the bright white sparkles all around?

I had an oil change looking like the bright spot and I was concerned but also did'nt know what metal flake looks like.
