What is a resonator?
OK, I know what a resonator is, but what is it for and how does it work?
The reason I ask is because I have a V1 Manzo catback exhaust and the resonator has been rattling lately. Paired with an OFH it used to sound fantastic, but the rattling has gotten so bad that I replaced the catback with the OEM stuff. Now it's way too quiet. The car has lost a lot of it's character. And the tiny exhaust tips just don't look right. Looking inside the resonator there is a screen that is loose and rattles when you bang it or shake it. It kind of resonates. Is this normal? Is that why it's called a resonator? I'm thinking about maybe taking some self tapping screws and drilling them through the "can" of the resonator to see if that will secure the metal screen thing. Anybody have a cutaway view of a resonator to see what's inside? |

Nope, it ain't supposed to be rattling. I reckon you could screw some screws into it to see if you can "catch" the rattling inner parts. Or, Bubba says, you could mash it (flatten it) with a BFH till it don't rattle no more. Or, you could take it off, take it to a muffler shop, have the cut it open and weld the innards down. Or, you could buy a new one ...... or maybe a used mid pipe. humfrz |

Since you can look in the hole and see the part rattling around, you could try to mash it down and pull the screen out.

My first course of action was to email Manzo to see if they'll sell me just a new resonator. If that doesn't happen, then I like Bubba's idea of mashing it with a BFH till it don't rattle no more. I think it may affect the "tuning" of the system but what the hell, if it works it works. If it doesn't, no big deal. Actually I'm getting used to the new sound of quietness. The car feels faster now. And I'm sure the neighbors really appreciate it. |

The only bad thing I have to say about Manzo is after about 4 1/2 years the resonator screen may separate. No rust, no leaks, no problems. Until now. I just realized that the Manzo V1 is an exact copy of the Invidia Q 300. It just costs less than half as much. I wouldn't be surprised if Invidia just buys the Manzo's, rebrands them and sells them at twice the price. |
