Why is it illegal to pump your own gas though? What's the rationale?

The city where I grew up in BC has had mandatory full serve for as long as I remember. Something to do with ensuring part time jobs for young people/students if I remember correctly. Don't think we could actually get fined for pumping our own at those stations though.

Strongly prefer to pump my own gas. No chance of the attendant taking it upon themselves to keep topping up my tank past full and doing harm.

This seems like something that you should prove you can do during your road test to get a license...

I haven't seen a full service pump in California since about 1980.

Only gas station in Sauble Beach is full serve. Seem to get a lot more of them out west as well. I could have 10km of gas left, and would rather try and make it 11km to pump my own vs having an attendant do it.

On and off rumblings of per-mile tax here as well. Pissed off all the Prius owners. The only way to do that is with some sort of GPS tracker in your car, which of course could not be used for any other purpose other than tracking mileage. Not in my car, Mr. Gubmint man. Go ahead and track the mileage of my jerry cans I take to the gas station in a wagon.

It will be in the form of those chips insurance companies use in some states. Plugs into the port. It will report not only mileage, but speed, % of throttle, etc. etc.. Basically everything you do.

I actually seek them out. Not in the FR-S but my others cars. I want to keep a few around for the elderly.

Odometer reading at start of year vs odometer reading at end of year = taxable distance. Has been done with company vehicles for decades.
No need for high tech GPS tracking devices and the paranoia they would create.

In 1990 I did a road trip to the OR coast and two gas stations forgot to put my gas cap back on when they finished pumping. The one in the middle wouldn't let me leave without a gas cap so I had to buy one. I stopped at both of those stations on the way out and retrieved my gas caps leaving me with 3 In NJ I had a moron do the top it off thing trying to get to an even amount even after I yelled at him to stop and tried to get out of the car to stop him but the other attendant stood there and blocked the door so I couldn't get out. After spilling a quart or so all over the side of the car and down the inside he trashed the charcoal evap canister and the car would barely run for the next 10 miles or so and it stunk for weeks. I had to get the canister replaced and that wasn't cheap but, no recourse because it was for safety I also had one of these morons in NJ refuse to let me put lead substitute in my 1960 Willys before pumping because it was 'illegal' and I really needed gas right away. I actually called the police and when they showed up they told me I was welcome to leave, so I did. I sputtered into the next town and got gas there. Fukk full serve

Everyone since 1977 knows how to fill up except a few in New Jersey and Oregon.

FIFY. The only adults who don't know how to fill their own gas are a very small few in New Jersey and Oregon that have likely never or rarely left the state.

And maybe the President...
