Just tested this ("flappy thingy" as everyone in paddock called it) on NYST this past weekend. Worked like a charm. Ran the car from full tank until hit fuel light. No issues all day long. Great addition and well worth it !!!!

So the factory has divets in place already and Velox manufactured a part that slides right in?
Almost looks like Toyobaru forgot to make that plastic flap themselves ~

It would be interesting to see if the cars that come with a FA20DIT use the same surge tank but with this flap installed. Hard to believe they would build that hinge into the cast and then not even use it. It's totally worth $79 but man that is an expensive 1in x 1in piece of plastic. Hahaha

Convenient part sharing that just made sense to bring production cost down. The provision is there for the cars that do need a flapper door.
Beancounters won, and I agree that the average person will never need a flapper, just how the average person doesn't need brake ducts. |

Well, I think it's BS. Who wouldn't want their flapper?

I'm not aware on all the details of how the fuel systems work, but I'm going to be the devil's advocate here for a second and say there maybe a disadvantage of subaru putting an oem one. I suppose it need to open to let fuel in and close to prevent it from getting out, but what if it got stuck closed? Or maybe break and get stuck in the fuel pump. I know that's a long strech, but since there is no advantage on the street for the flapper, that mean that even a super small disadvantage or potential problem means the net result is negative for subaru corporation.
My opinion is that subaru should have included this, but on a business side, it doesn't make a lot of sense to include it. Maybe it's there for when subaru make the turbo STI BRZ . On a side note, the idea and design from Velox is brilliant, and surely it's a fraction of the price of any other solution. If I ever have one day fuel starvation problem, i'm buying that. |

However, *wink wink* I disagree with the risk assessment. There are a bajillion flappy-clicky things on this machine more prone to failure than that that particular one. If that thing were somehow jammed or gummed up, there would be much bigger issues afoot. Still makes for a good argument.

Well I hate to admit and was skeptical that this product would work, but I wanted to get rid of my surge tank and installed this. Prior to a surge tank I could fuel starve on my home track at 7/8th of a tank with re71s and velox aero. I am now on Hoosier R7s with pretty serious aero and was able to take the car to just under half a tank before fuel starving, and it only happened at the end of a long left hander that is a sustained 1.4g. Success in my bookk as I can run about a session and a half without starving, so just need to top off between sessions.

I'd like to take a quick moment to reiterate that our fix is *not* a replacement for a surge-tank. However, it is a simple solution that remains in the OEM gas tank and does not add extra hardware/lines to the car. From the feedback above and @ATL BRZ outing this weekend; there is a direct correlation between fuel door effectiveness and the duration of the left-hand turn. This makes sense as the door was designed to keep the fuel in the basket. With a long left-hand turn and enough g-forces/fuel consumption, the basket will eventually run dry. Seems that half tank for those that have long left-hand turns (7-10 seconds) is about the level of fuel they can get away with. Thanks, Eric |

After testing, with the fuel flap and a second pump on the siphon side of the tank I was able to take a Jackson Racing Supercharger (low boost pully), 91oct, down to a the low fuel light indication without any fuel starvation. One lap at full speed was accomplished after with the fuel light came on, followed by a cool down lap. The car was pulled off track afterwards because I did not want to run out of fuel on track. No fuel starvation at any point was ever felt. This was for a fully race-prepared NASA ST/TT4 vehicle.
The second fuel pump is pumping directly into the primary fuel pumps basket. |
